Polyglot Persistence, Riak + Postgres

The past few years have seen a rise in both the number and popularity of alternative data storage solutions. Unfortunaly, these more recent databases have typically been categorized under the misnomer NoSQL. By classifying all non-relational datastores together muddles the landscape, making it harder for developers to know which tools solve which problems and why.

In this talk, Tom will provide a brief overview of Riak, a distributed database, and some of its more advanced features. He will then go on to discuss Riak's strengths, weaknesses and applicability from a real-world perspective. Lastly, Tom will discuss backend architectures that leverage both Postgres and Riak, drawing inspiration from real-life production use cases.

Tom Santero - Technical Evangelist, Basho Technologies

Tom Santero (@tsantero) joined Basho Technologies in March 2012. Prior to Basho, Tom spent several years in the finance industry in equity sales and trading, which eventually led him to build automated trading systems in his spare time. As Technical Evangelist at Basho, Tom is tasked with educating engineers and architects on all things Riak, supporting the Riak community and hacking on various ad-hoc projects. When he's not working, Tom can usually be found somewhere in Brooklyn, chain smoking cigarettes and enjoying a good beer.

one of the best presentations I've seen in a while. Really inspired me to look outside my comfort zone to see what else is going on.
