Image Competition Workshop Taught by Tim Mathiesen

In recent years, the process of competition has had dramatic changes. What used to be known as “print” competition has changed to “digital” or “image” competition. What has happened? What happened is the change from traditional film to digital capture. Along with these changes, the whole process of image competition has seen exciting, but confusing changes. While we still accept prints at state, district and International (PPA) competition, many of the rules that we came to know have changed. Unless you are up to date on these changes, you will not be successful in making your entries acceptable.

This class will give you the correct procedure in preparing you images and selecting the best images for competition. We will start with the basics of what competition is all about. Next we will examine the rules as they pertain to the specific competition you want to participate. At the PPOC level, we only accept digital files. We will discuss the correct setting to be sure that your images are the correct size and color space. For the District competition (PPC & PPA) we will go over the rules and preparation for that competition. For the International competition (PPA) we discuss the very specific rules that must be adhered to, so that you will not have your entries rejected.

We will discuss image selection, categories, titles, judging and expectations. This workshop will last 3 hours and will help each attendee better understand the fundamentals of image competition. This class does not guarantee 100% success. It will give you the correct tools to better understand the judging process and understand what the judges are looking.

Tim Mathiesen is a PPA Master of Photography, Fellow of the American Society of Photographers, past President of PPOC, PPC, American Society of Photographers, School Photographers of California and the Industrial Photographers of Colorado. Here is my honest feedback. The information was good but could have been presented with detail in about 1.5 hours. There were too many side stories and digressions on subjects that had nothing to do with the topic. Like others that have posted comments I to was hoping for more specific information about what elements (besides a creative title) makes a good competition print. I am sorry I can post more positive feedback.

Tim did an excellent job in this seminar. However, the information that he gave was not what I was expecting. I was hoping for a workshop where he shows us what makes good competition prints and critique the work of the attendees. Nevertheless, Tim was very comprehensive with his presentation.
