We try and cover it at least once a year...Flint Knapping!!! a true primitive skill, tested over time as an essential survival skill and rewarding hobby. Nick Stamates will go through the basics and allow you to create your own project, from sharp edge to arrowhead and even discuss traditional ways to attach handles.
Please bring safety glasses, leather gloves and band aids. While knapping rock safety is paramount. We try to make this as family friendly as possible, but with little ones who are unaware of surroundings and sharp items may be best to not attend. Very sharp flakes fly off these rocks that are extremely sharp.
As to flint knapping tools, if you have some, bring them!
If you don't we, do have some but not enough to share. For those of you handy as all get-out, do a search on youtube and check some of the tools people are building. A fist sized rock that is hard enough to scratch glass and comfortable in your hand may be all you need. Large nails or antler tips can also be used.
If you have tool ideas, please post them in the message board.
