An admirable and dear friend of mine has kindly offered to enlighten us with one of the most interesting discussions our group has had yet!
Tim is an exceptionally intelligent and informed person in both theoretical and practical knowledge of science, religion, consciousness and the environment.
Here is a very brief summary of this discussion:
Much of our talk about religion involves belief. We ask questions like,
- what do people in that religion believe?
- do you believe in God or not?
Belief in a given metaphysical stance has been a core concern for every religions, but this kind of discourse can obscure other important concerns, notably how we are to treat each other and, crucially, what kinds of regular practise are thought necessary to be a legitimate member of a given religion?
Ken Wilber has worked to popularise the idea of a "post-metaphysical stance" which means for a religion, among other things, focusing on how that kind of spirituality is to be practised adequately, rather than on set of logical propositions which must be believed.
This approach points the way toward a more nuanced kind of religion beyond the simplistic cognitive tactics of belief (or non-belief).

Thanks for your hospitality and for your tolerance. That was the first time I'd tried to talk about those ideas to a group. Unfortunately that meant it wasn't as focussed and pithy as I'd like and it all went a bit long. I hoped to only speak for a little and have a lot of time for interaction ? I apologise that the talking all went as long as it did.
You're a fascinating group of people. If I'm able to speak to you again, I promise to be more concise. I want to hear more of your thoughts!
