North shore beach day

This is our 2nd visit to this tranquil location.  The date & time were chosen based on the tides so our puggies can safely swim.

On the north shore, past Sunset beach but before Turtle Bay, there used to be a huge oceanfront farm where sheep grazed-you still may see the sheep periodically, but the land’s been bought by the state and it’s no longer a functional farm.

In 2002, when Sunset Beach Colony was built, next to the surfing spot Velzyland or VLand, a small parking lot was built next to it leading directly to the beach, but immediately gated closed due to safety/budget concerns.  There are 2 large parcels of oceanfront land which is a city and county park with beautiful shaded grass that is open to the public, but virtually undiscovered.

We’ve been there several times both weekdays and weekends and there is either no one there or 1-2 people passing through.

So if you’re open to a drive to the country and up for exploring a hidden gem, let’s give it another visit.

Past Sunset beach, just past Sunset Beach Colony (a luxury gated oceanfront development),

take the turn off toward the ocean through the old farm:

You will come to a gate where you can unload your things and make a short walk to the park.

You can either leave your vehicle parked there (it is slightly hidden from the road and park, so if you don't feel comfortable leaving your car here, you can move it back to Sunset Beach Colony as described below).

Your alternate entrance is this: the closest I can get is to Google map at the bus stop[masked] Kam Hwy, Kahuku-note the 2 middle blue bus stops in the pic below-the ocean side one is where you will park:

You can park anywhere along the black lava rock wall fronting Sunset Beach Colony, walk northeast a few steps to the gate and down the blacktop road to the small parking lot and you are on the beach:

Pugs must be leashed till you arrive safely at the park.

Just like at any other beach, don’t leave valuables in the car.

Continue to walk north along the beach, there’s a path past a picnic table,

trash cans and it will open up to a large grassy shaded park.

If you continue, there is another larger park.  We will meet at whichever one is not being used that day, most likely the 2nd larger park:

We’re keeping it simple, so no potluck, just bring food/drinks for yourself.

There are no showers or any water source, so bring plenty of water, bowls and sunscreen.  Bring chairs and beach towels.  Some pugs love to float on boogie boards or inflatable water taxis, some owners bring life jackets to assist with pugs who are unlikely to swim.   Let’s enjoy this magical place in the summer when there are no big waves or crowds.

$1 per person will be collected going toward meetup dues.

Allow yourself plenty of time to get there and call if you need help with directions.  Look for a lime green Pug meetup sign at the farm road entrance, there will be no sign at Sunset Beach Colony if you choose to park there.

Aloha, Pat   C221-0216.

Matai had a wonderful time with the other pugs. He's still a little shy with other dogs, but he loves humans and his social skills are getting much better with his fellow pugs.

No potluck, just bring your own food and drink, it's too much to haul tables, supplies at this location. It's a beautiful spot.

Is this meetup going to be a potluck or just bring for yourself? Wasn't sure, but I am super excited to see everyone and bust out Laszlo's little life vest!!!
