Managing desktops with Puppet and Foreman

At Conductor, we’re using Puppet and Foreman to automate the provisioning and management of our employees' desktops, and provide status reports and governance for them. This talk will step through how we made the decision to automate, some of the challenges, and our basic process.

Highlights include:

Reducing internal IT software provisioning time from 4 hours to 5 minutes per machine. 8 step walkthrough of how to set up your internal configuration management infrastructure. Automation benefits, including rolling upgrades out across your entire internal network in a controlled, monitored, centralized process

We recently published an article to our engineering blog, Nightlight about our evolving workstation automation system.  If you want a short preview of the presentation, check out the article at http://nightlight.conductor.com/internal-it-automation-with-puppet/.

Alex is Director of Technical Operations at Conductor, Inc. and has been an operations engineer and manager for over 10 years.  He's a regular contributor to Nightlight and IT Central Station, and writes frequently about challenges and solutions facing operations professionals managing large scale distributed systems.
