Boycott the Pet Expo (Pollywood Pets)

Join the Puppy Mill Awareness and S.M.A.R.T. Meetups in a joint boycott and rally at the entrance of the trade center.

Pet Expo Protest

8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
You can come and go as you need to.
Parking: next door at the Newspaper.

Please bring your own sign. Make sure the information on the sign is easy to read, large letters and factual. The Puppy Mill Awareness Meetup has written the Trade Center with our concerns over having this event - it will only promote the sale of more dogs from the Pollywood pet store. Pollywood Pets has a history of neglect and has been investigated by various organizations. Steve Neavling, A Free Press Writer, published an article exposing Pollywood in 2007. “More than 30 people have complained to the state this year about Pollywood Pets, inside the Gibraltar Trade Center in Mt. Clemens. That's more than any other store. Among the complaints: 20 kittens stuffed in a pen; sick puppies covered in feces, some injured by broken cages; guinea pigs bleeding and overcrowded, one without an eye.

State inspectors found similar conditions in visits since 2003 but did nothing. Inspection records show they found a dog's carcass in a freezer and kittens who died after receiving no veterinary care. Other kittens, too young for legal sale, were infested with fleas and slumped over in dehydration in an old birdcage.”

Pollywood was investigated by an organization called Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS). Read about Deborah Howard’s visit.

Since August of 2009, Animal Control has logged four complaints regarding sick dogs. Most people do not know where to file complaints now, so you can imagine that for every one complaint there are likely many more. In addition, The Michigan Humane Society has a campaign called “Protect our Puppies” targeting pet stores. Please support all the campaigns by participating in our rally.

The Pollywood Boycott was incredibly successful on many levels: there were only a few vendors (as in 6?)...they were expecting 35, the mobile vet pick up our flyers to pass out, The Macomb Daily interviewed us and many people stopped to learn more. Oh, the cops that pulled in to the trade center left without stopping -... waved at us *snicker*. So much for a big pet expo pulling in prospective buyers to the pet store :)

I have nine signs and plastic for covering (see Pam AM or Cathy PM). Looks like we will get some rain this afternoon. We usually do protest in the rain, so come prepared.

Have you started making your signs? "shut down Pollywood," "Pollywood is no place for animals," "adopt, don't shop," "Pollywood: horrible conditions," to "boycott pollywood."

We don't need everyone there at 8:30. Is there one person who can be there first thing and stay with me until noon?
