AKC registered mutts for $1,000?!?
Bark Place Avenue recently moved out of their downtown Rochester store (130 East University Drive) and into Pet Supply Plus just down the road in Rochester. We are removing them from our watch list after monitoring puppy sales for the last two years. Store Photos.
Pet Supplies Plus signed our pledge form, so they will not be allowed sell puppies at this new location. Actually, this store was featured on the cover of the Oakland Press after they signed up!
The Back Story: The store stopped selling puppies after they moved from their smaller location (814 North Main St, Rochester) in November of 2010 to the downtown location. They recently removed their online Puppy Finding Service Form and are encouraging adoptions. The owner agreed to sign a pledge not to sell puppies last August, but has not submitted the forms.
When I asked her about the Bichon and Maltese pups listed for sale right before Christmas 2011, the owner stated the Bichon was from an Ohio puppy mill she found online (Hoobly) "with papers" (#1 red flag) and it was in bad shape. My gut feeling was she is not a legit breeder and questioned why she had time to drive all the way to Ohio for a dog, pay $50 and then sell pups for $1,000. Why would she breed a dog that was “rescued” from a puppy mill to put the dog to work again?
She listed them as “Bichon AKC Maltese mix”…(#2 red flag).
Puppy Mill Awareness does not support any time of puppy retail sales and warn families about using businesses that charge a finder’s fee to locate a dog or sell marked up “designer” dogs.
