Canterbury Tails Pets, LLC, Kansas—shipped 22 puppies since the 2011 holiday season. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection reports show that serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act related to lack of veterinary care. “White Lhasa has pink flesh protrusions from the 3rd eyelids of both eyes. This dog has thick creamy discharge and cloudy corneas of both eyes. Eye conditions such as these can cause pain and loss of vision”. Another dog was reported to have a laceration on the right shoulder two inches in length with fresh blood. Inventory reports show they have between 370 – 450 adult dogs! This is a puppy mill!

Tina Schumer from Missouri, our nation’s Puppy Mill Capital, was cited for multiple violations in 2007 including “An adult female cocker spaniel named, Ginger, was observed holding her head titled to the right. The owner stated this had been an ongoing behavior. The hair around the ears was matted extensively. This dog should have the matting removed from the ears and examined.” The outside gravel pens are in need of cleaning in order to remove feces. An inside pen containing two adult yorkies was observed with an excessive accumulation of feces.”

RESPONSE TO UTICA'S CLAIMS:

Question: Much attention is brought to Pet Stores that sell puppies in that they are easily associated with "Puppy Mills". How can I be sure that Utica Pet Supply does not do business with "Puppy Mills"?

Answer: Utica Pet Supply uses the highest standard in the pet industry. All our breeders must hold a U.S.D.A. license; which means they are all inspected and regulated by the Federal Government. Our breeders all have Vets on staff that care for the puppies as well as the breed stock, the vaccinations are kept current on the puppies as well as the Sire and Dam.

QUESTIONS:

Mr. Goeth, please explain why Joy Mundinac (3500 S. National Ave, Springfield, MO) is not licensed by the USDA and appears to be shipping from an apartment complex?

Does high standards include using “brokers”? How do you inspect breeders that use brokers? Ann Nolan (4736 Maudonia, Van Buren, AR) has kenneled 142-191 adult dogs and her 2007 inspection report suggests she does NOT provide proper vet care. “A female cocker spaniel had a corneal opacity on its left eye. There was also a serous discharge. The globe was enlarged. The animal was scratching at the eye periodically. This is an older dog and the owner stated this was a longstanding condition.”

USDA means these are commercial breeders that are selling wholesale to distant states = puppy mills!

John & Roxanne,

The photos did not come off the internet. Check with Canterbury and then give me a call. I plan to publish, but I would like to give you an opportunity to transition to a new business model.

On Friday we met a local Utica woman who spent $1,000 on a Lhasa/Shih mix puppy last year. She has spent an additional $1,000 in vet bills treating a chronic ear infection and breathing problems. On top of that, her dog appears to be unsocialized and is extremely skittish. Possibly she spent the first four months in a cage when she should have been developing skills. She wants to know where her dog came from and was upset that the store has been working with puppy mills.

This nice couple purchased a Bichon puppy from Utica Pet Supply 11 years ago and has been dealing with all sorts of health problems costing $10,000 in vet bills. First it started with premature cataract. Both eyes needed surgery at age 2. She had to give him arthritis and allergy shots. She had skin conditions and died of Cushings. They almost went back to Utica too look at puppies, but luckily we let them know the dogs health problems was not an isolated case.

This woman purchased a Bichon from Utica Pet Supply 7 years ago. The store would not provide paperwork for the dog. He is extremely anxiety and appears to have some mental problems. They have not been able to train him. The store told her he would be around 12 lbs and he now weighs in at 22 lbs. She heard from others that they too have had problem with their puppy from Utica.
