Utica Pet Supply (45460 Van Dyke Road) has a history of working with large out-of-state commercial breeders. Happy Tails Kennels in Minnesota supplied puppies from 2003-2006. The Detroit Free Press exposed this puppy mill connection and listed Utica Pet Supply as one of the top importers of puppies in Michigan. Google Utica Pet Supply.

Some kennels have over 200 dogs -- Puppy mills!

The Puppy Mill Awareness investigation revealed the store has continued to work with large out-of-state breeders in Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas between 2009-May 2012.

The following breeders have shipped puppies to Utica Pet Supply in 2012.

Canterbury Tails Pets, LLC, Kansas—shipped 22 puppies since the 2011 holiday season. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection reports show that serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act related to lack of veterinary care. “White Lhasa has pink flesh protrusions from the 3rd eyelids of both eyes. This dog has thick creamy discharge and cloudy corneas of both eyes. Eye conditions such as these can cause pain and loss of vision”. Another dog was reported to have a laceration on the right shoulder two inches in length with fresh blood. Inventory reports show they have between 370 – 450 adult dogs! This is a puppy mill!

Ann Nolan, from Arkansas, shipped 11 puppies in 2012. Inventory reports show this licensed broker has caged 142-191 adult dogs! In May of 2011, Nolan was cited for inadequate cleaning – “numerous indoor/outdoor doors with rusted debris, grime, and rust.” In 2007 – “A female cocker spaniel had a corneal opacity on its left eye. There was also a serous discharge. The globe was enlarged. The animal was scratching at the eye periodically. This is an older dog and the owner stated this was a longstanding condition.”

Tina Schumer from Missouri, our nation’s Puppy Mill Capital, was cited for multiple violations in 2007 including “An adult female cocker spaniel named, Ginger, was observed holding her head titled to the right. The owner stated this had been an ongoing behavior. The hair around the ears was matted extensively. This dog should have the matting removed from the ears and examined.”  “The outside gravel pens are in need of cleaning in order to remove feces. An inside pen containing two adult yorkies was observed with an excessive accumulation of feces.”

3/15/10 Sent a formal invitation to stop selling puppies and take the Puppy Friendly Pet Store pledge through the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) initiative in person to John Goeth. The store did not respond.


3/27/10 Followed-up with John via a phone call. The store state they do not plan to stop selling puppies.


1/31/12 Resent the formal invitation and pledge form. The store did not respond.


2/14/12Stopped by store to discuss the invitation and pledge form. The store asked me to leave.  

2/27/12 Sent a list of our expectations, along with an offer to support them during the business transition to adoption events only. The store did not respond.
