Thank you for sharing Daisy's story with us.

I am glad to know you didn't give up on her. Sometimes people can not afford the treatments and get overwhelmed with caring for a sick dog.

Kennel cough and worms seem to be very common at pet stores. Now, why would you want RETURN the dog like a piece of merchandise for a full refund??? That proves that Petland is so insensitive and should not be in the business of finding homes for dogs. Once they enter into your home they become family.

I am sorry you were never reimbursed for your vet expenses.

Here is what you need to do next:

1) Report them to the Humane Society of the United States. They have a lawsuit against Petland and maintain a database on all the sick dogs.

2) Contact the Pet Shop Puppies organization. They also have a database on all pet stores. There are over 20 at the Petland Novi store now.

3) Contact the Twelve Oaks Mall Manager Dan Jones. He stated they were not aware of any sick dogs. He needs to know this is not a new issue.

Dan Jones
General Manager Twelve Oaks Mall
248-348-9400, Press 3 and then 4 for Mall Management.

4) Contact Taubman Property Management and let them know they should not support this store in their mall. They can end the lease based on ethical business operations.

If anyone purchases a sick dog recently, I also recommend reporting them to Animal Control who now oversees Pet Stores. If they have illnesses that spread the store may need to be closed down and cleaned out.

We had another person who bought a sick dog from Petland Novi] stop at our rally 11-14-09.

The Pappion puppy is now 6 months old and she purchased him two months ago. She is not sure what is causing all of his symptoms but the vet mentioned[b] coccidia. She will be reporting this to Animal Control, The BBB, HSUS, PetShopPuppies and the newspaper.

Coccidia are small protozoans that live in the intestinal tracts of dogs and cats. They cause disease most commonly in puppies and kittens less than six months of age, in adult animals whose immune system is suppressed, or in animals who are stressed in other ways (e.g.; change in ownership, other disease present).

How are coccidia transmitted?

A puppy is not born with the coccidia organisms in his intestine. However, once born, the puppy is frequently exposed to his mother's feces, and if the mother is shedding the infective cysts in her feces, then the young animals will likely ingest them and coccidia will develop within the young animal's intestines. Since young puppies, usually those less than six months of age, have no immunity to coccidia, the organisms reproduce in great numbers and parasitize the young animal's intestines. Oftentimes, this has severe effects.

Although most infections are the result of spread from the mother, this is not always the case. Any infected puppy or kitten is contagious to other puppies. In breeding facilities, shelters, animal hospitals, etc., it is wise to isolate those infected from those that are not.

What are the symptoms of coccidiosis?

The primary sign of an animal suffering with coccidiosis is diarrhea. The diarrhea may be mild to severe depending on the level of infection. Blood and mucous may be present, especially in advanced cases. Severely affected animals may also vomit, lose their appetite, become dehydrated, and in some instances, die from the disease.

It should be mentioned that stress plays a role in the development of coccidiosis. It is not uncommon for a seemingly healthy puppy to arrive at his new home and develop diarrhea several days later leading to a diagnosis of coccidia. If the puppy has been at the new home for less than thirteen days, then he had coccidia before he arrived. Remember, the incubation period (from exposure to illness) is about thirteen days. If the puppy has been with his new owner several weeks, then the exposure to coccidia most likely occurred after the animal arrived at the new home.

What are the risks?

Although many cases are mild, it is not uncommon to see severe, bloody diarrhea result in dehydration and even death. This is most common in animals who are ill or infected with other parasites, bacteria, or viruses. Coccidiosis is very contagious, especially among young puppies. Entire kennels may become contaminated, with puppies of many age groups simultaneously affected.

AKC is a private for-profit business with no authority to inspect or regulate anyone. AKC can require an inspection or certain conditions in order to grant AKC registration for puppies, but in practice they just collect bloodline data and money. It's widely known that there is little or no connection between AKC papers and healthy (or even properly bred) dogs.

A former employee at a Petland store stated that the owner typed up fake AKC papers for some of the dogs he bought from puppy mills. He said the owner had a supply of the certificates from AKC, and he just filled them in and gave them to customers when they bought dogs.

What: Petland Boycott Rally (Novi)
When: Thursday, June 9, 2011 4:00 PM

Where: Denny's (in Novi)
27750 Novi Rd
Novi, MI 48377
(248) 348-3370

Starting in June we plan to protest from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. every Saturday as part of a long boycott. We are also protesting one day during the week (various days 4-6).

Learn more about Petland, Novi (Breeders, Brokers, Media and Complaints)

The protests will be in front of Denny's, Red Lobster and Comerica Bank at the main entrance to Twelve Oaks Mall. This is a busy road, please do not bring your dogs.

Signs: We will have plenty of signs available.

Contact: Pam Sordyl 734-718-7100

Parking: In the back of Denny's lot.

General Reminders:

1) Do not go into the store, before, during or after the rally. If you choose to protest, you can no longer go into the store to check anything out on any day.

2) Don't walk or park in the mall lot. We have to stay on public property.

3) Don't get too close to the entrance. If people stop, make sure they pull around to the Denny's lot where we will have more information. We can't block traffic.

4) If you are new, you do not need to speak to the public. If someone asks you questions at the exit, tell them to pull around so they do not block traffic. Most often, they do not, so try to at least hand them a flyer.

6) If it looks like rain/snow, find some clear plastic bags for your sign. I use clear drop cloth. Thank you in advance for joining us.

This month I contacted the Michigan Department of Agriculture asking for complaint information (from customers), response details, inspection reports since August 2009. Even though the MDA stopped regulating pet stores, it appears they are responding to some cases. In addition I asked for any internal investigation information regarding their rejected inter-state health certificates.

This is what they sent me in response to my request. "Your request is denied. The records would interferre with law enforcement proceedings. These records are related to an open investigation".

According to the Health Certificates I already have, the MDA has rejected 6 health certificates between Jan - Mar for not meeting vacination requirements. This seems to be a trend lately with some other pet stores. The dogs are coming AR, MO and SC.

Last night a guy wearing a Twelve Oaks shirt (staff) and a security officer came out to our protest to tell use to move our signs off their property. We have held 40 protests since Nov 2009 and this is the first time they have come out!!! It appears that the big Twelve Oaks sign is actually on Red Lobsters property. This could get interesting.

This is one of Petland Novi's breeders. A prison compound!

Melanie Moore (Lamar MO) of MAM Kennels.

I included a copy of shipping record from MAM to Petland Novi.

The photos were taken as print screens from the HSUS investigation.

Below is a "fact sheet" outlining all of our findings surrounding Petland Novi's business operations. We prepared this for the media and general public. Please review and share with friends and family.

Download Brochure

There is only one Petland store remaining in Michigan, located at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi. Petland is the nation's largest puppy retailer who has been exposed locally by Channel 7 for selling sick dogs and the Humane Society of the United Statesand Animal Planet for working with puppy mills.

[ Using Large Kennels ]

Petland Novi is selling sick dogs because they come from large commercial breeders and brokers. One supplier, Opal Featherston of Royale Kennel (Whiting KS), has inventory records listing 773 adult dogs during an USDA inspection. This is considered a mega mill.

[ Many Midwest Breeders ]

Petland Novi has shipped puppies from over 100 different breeders between 2009-2011. Puppies are shipped from the Midwest"puppy mill belt" (OH, KS, MO, AR, MN) .

[ Primary Brokers & Volume ]

The House of Pets, (Fresno OH) and Patrick Fulton (Alden MN) have been Petland Novi's primary brokers. House of Pets supplied 68% of the puppies in 2010 - approximately 57 per month.

The House of Pets, Abe Miller (Fresno OH) was Petland Novi's primary supplier in 2010. The United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) records show that this kennel housed 133 adult dogs and 110 puppies in June of 2008. With approximately 16 different breeds, the House of Pets provides the wide variety of dogs demanded by pet stores. Inspection reports show this broker was not only working with unlicensed breeders, but that it was also cited for non-compliances to the Animal Welfare Act in the regulated areas of housing, primary enclosures, cleaning, veterinary care, records, compatible grouping, feeding and identification.

[ Shocking Inspection Reports ]

Many of the USDA licensed dog kennels have violations to the Animal Welfare Act noted on their annual USDA inspection reports. Some kennels are not even inspected annually. An inspector may only return if major non-compliances are found. Note, 11 of the 16 suppliers during 2009-2010 have non-compliances including excessive feces, no heat, performing surgeries, unattended bite wounds, excessive body and ear hair matts, low voltage fencing, minimum floor space, cats with backbone and ribs showing, dirty dogs, lack of bedding and shade, accumulated grime and lack of veterinary care.

[ Humane Society of the United States Investigations ]

MAM Kennel was filmed as part of HSUS's initial investigation (See video). The store received puppies directly from Mike & Melanie Moore/MAM Kennel in 2009 and 2011, a puppy mill that has had numerous Animal Welfare Act violations. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZsCwOy5rdI

QD Kennel was selling over 5,000 puppies a year. In 2009, Petland Novi received shipments from a large-scale commercial puppy broker in Missouri that ships puppies all over the United States. QD Kennel reportedly grosses over $1,000,000 in sales.

[ Over 50 Sick dogs Reported ]

Many complaints have been reported to PetShopPuppies.org, the MDA, Local Animal Control, Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan and the Better Business Bureau with problems noted. Some illnesses, such as Coccidia and Guardia, can be passed to humans. Luxating Patella issue is almost always seen in poor breeding, especially in toy breeds.

[ The PetShopPuppies.org Reports ]

PetShopPuppies.org revealed the following problems noted by customers who had purchased puppies from Petland Novi. Many of these items noted are contagious to humans. et Shop Puppies Report http://www.petshoppuppies.com/report.asp?ID=PETSHOP9494

[ MDA Investigations ]

In 2011, the Michigan Department of Agriculture launched two investigations into their inter-state health certificates: imports without proper vaccinations and missing certificates.

[ Channel 7 Investigations ]

Protests at Twelve Oaks Mall began after Channel 7 exposed this store in October 2009 for selling a sick puppy. Heather Catallo, an Investigative Reporter, completed a second investigation in November 2009 after another sick dog allegation was discovered.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jpb6jQiNIGc&feature=related

[ On-going Campaigns ]

As of November 2011, approximately 60 protests have been held at Twelve Oaks Mall demanding the public boycott Petland. The pressure has been on all the Petland stores across the county. Beginning in March 2009, Bora Kim from Channel 4, covered the Class Action Lawsuit with ties to the Peltand Westland store. Animal Planet exposed the chain in May of 2010 after the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) completed a 8-month investigation.

In 2011, protests at Petland Novi, were featured in a short film called "Holding out for Buster".
