Data Doubleheader - PyHou - November Meetup

Hello Pythoneers!

This month's topic is a "Doubleheader". Following announcements and lightning talk(s), Kojo Idrissa and Joe Kington will deliver short (20 min) presentations on matplotlib and non-trivial processing of Excel data.

Our meetup is located at the Stag's Head Pub, near Richmond and Shepherd. Please enjoy their menu and drink offerings, so they continue to enjoy hosting us! Lastly, please RSVP (even if you're a "Maybe"!) to assist us with capacity planning.

Share your Lightning Talks! A "lightning talk" is a quick mini-presentation (5 minutes maximum) on any Python topic you'd like.  We'll save time for 2-3 of these each month: to save a spot, post a comment with your talk's title/topic. Beginner topics are always welcome!

Presentations Wanted: If you'd like to share a topic with the group at an upcoming meetup, let's talk!

It sounds like this week we have a "double header":

    Joe does matplotlib. (20 min)

    Kojo does Excel. (20 min)

I'll do a lightning talk on Canopy at the start (5 min)

    (1) What is order do you guys want to present?

    (2) Does anybody else want to give a lightning talk?

I think mine first would be a better order. First, we look at processing/sorting data, THEN we look at a tool for potentially plotting/visualizing results. I MAY be biased, cuz I'd like a better handle ON visualizing MY results. :-)

While Lightning talks at big conferences are limited to 5 minutes - ours are not strictly enforced by pain of cushion like at PyCon. I for one want to hear about our new iPython overlords.

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend the meeting but I am very interested in all of the presentations. Has anyone considered videoing the talks and posting somewhere for later viewing?

So, am I talking about my growing spreadsheet app? Or are we hearing about matplotlib?

Sounds good to me! 20 minutes should be fine. I was mostly planning on giving an overview of the architecture and "philosophy" of matplotlib, as well as a handful of common gotchas. It seems to be what most tutorials miss and the root cause of a lot of confusion.

I've struggled a little bit with matplotlib in the past (perhaps due to the flavour of interpreter I normally use) but it's an amazing visualisation tool - looking forward to hearing about it.

Hey everyone, I'm doing some research on an online marketplace for connecting experienced developers to beginners. I've attached a short survey and would be grateful to get your thoughts.

Anyone planning to attend startup weekend houston 11/15?

I just registered. Anyone doing seismic processing?

I've considered it, but probably won't this time. I did one back in Feb 2011. I enjoyed it!

I am attending the startup weekend. Seismic processing is interesting to me.
