Quantified Self Silicon Valley Meet-Up #11 (Huawei in Santa Clara)

  • This location is shown only to members

Quantified Self Labs global partners

Please join us on March 20th for another night of self-tracking presentations, sharing lessons learned and the exhibition of QS tools.

We'll be at Huawei this time, so be sure to RSVP early to grab your spot. Talks will be strictly limited to 7.5 minutes + 7.5 minutes for Q&A. Lisa and Karen will be hosting along with the good folks of Huawei. Lots of fun will be had. :)

We have speaking spots open. Please let me know if you have a cool self-tracking or quantified self experiment to share at ktherzog at gmail dot com.  (put "March 20th QS talk" in the subject line).

A very sincere thanks to Huawei for generously offering both venue and video sponsorship and food and beverage support which allows us to greatly reduce the attendance fee and to video presentations and post them for later viewing. Please pass your gratitude on to the Huawei team.

Map and directions can be found HERE

SCHEDULE:

6 pm – 7:00 pm SOCIAL HOUR AND DEMOS

Think: "science fair" for adults + healthy snacks. If you are making something useful for self-trackers – software, hardware, web services, or data standards – you are welcome to informally demo during the social hour. We will have tables and power strips where you can plug in a laptop, but paper is good too. Please let us know in advance if you want to participate.

7 pm – 8:30 pm IGNITE+ SHOW&TELLS

Speakers:

• Allan Johnson: "Lifelogging 2.0"

• Maha Alnajjar: "Tracking My Research Methods"

• TBA

We reserve the presentation slots for personal self-tracking stories. QS talks should answer the three prime questions: 1) What did you do? 2) How did you do it? 3) What did you learn? Please let us know in your RSVP if you're interested in presenting so we can discuss your topic.

The 7.5 minute presentation will be followed by a second 7.5 minutes of Q&A. We will have space for 4 to 5 presenters and a Group Mind session. If you've never been to a meet-up before, you can get a sense of what the talks are like from watching videos of previous QS talks. If desired, click here for more info and here for tips on how to deliver a fantastic quick-fire presentation.

If we have time we'll do Group Mind again.  If you have an experiment or a project you'd like to share? The format for group mind is 2.5 minutes to talk about your question, project, issue, proposal, challenge and 2.5 minutes to solicit ideas and brainstorming from our members. A great way to kickstart or problem-solve your QS issue. If you'd like a Group Mind spot, please send Karen an email to ktherzog at gmail dot com and put Group Mind in the subject line.

This is a great opportunity for people new to the QS community to uncover issues and get feedback. It's also a great opportunity for experienced trackers to understand confounding variables and other tough problems.

8:30 pm – 9:30 pm MORE SOCIAL TIME

Talk to the speakers, chat with new and old friends, ask other people what they're tracking, and generally hang out and have a great time.

Thank you Lisa and Karen for organizing another very interesting QS meeting. FYI - another indication that QS may be heading mainstream: ‏@CBSSunday Morning aired a segment on Mar 23 by tech journalist David Poque regarding Smartwatches and QS...
"Taking measure of @quantifiedself Movement". This segment included @QuantifiedBob's efforts to gather/track his data http://ow.ly/uSeiY

This was my first QS Meetup, so I was lucky to get the volunteer slot at the "registration desk" and meet most attendees on the way in :-). Big thanks to Allan, Maha and Lisa for sharing, to the folks at Huawei for hosting, and to everyone else for making it happen! An excellent evening overall.

I don't get it. Dave Asprey is sponsoring this meeting that is in direct conflict with the regular date of the Smart Life Forum (SVHI) of which he is Chairman? Who got their wires crossed?

Thanks Karen. It wasn't that I was suggesting that you should be running the meeting dates past Dave. That was irony. I raised the third-Thursday-meeting-date issue with Joe and Lisa at the initial meeting of Health Extension. And there was another third-Thursday QS conflict (I do not remember which QS meetup group) where I missed the Forum to attend. So few of the Bay Area QS meetings are held in the South Bay. I am disappointed that I will not be able to attend.

Thanks for the note Steven. There are so many amazing events in the Bay Area we're finding it increasingly difficult to steer around all of them. Hope that next time we won't overlap. :)
