Mattilda B. Sycamore's Nobody Passes

Hope you all enjoyed your Pride(s)!  In the absence of further suggestions, I'm going to go ahead and propose we read Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore's Nobody Passes!  It's an anthology, so hopefully we'll get lots of perspectives to hear and talk about.

From the book's website: "Nobody Passes: Rejecting the Rules of Gender and Conformity" is a collection of essays that confronts and challenges the very notion of belonging. By examining the perilous intersections of identity, categorization and community, contributors challenge societal mores and countercultural norms. From activism to academia, immigration to appropriation to cruising for sex, hip-hop to disability culture to trans communities, this anthology challenges standards of authenticity and destroys notions of acceptability.

I had a great time. It was great to see such passion among the members of the group and I appreciated the respect given to those who differed in opinion. I was thinking of our discussion on the bus ride home and of the dangers of groupthink. Differing views and debate on subject matter only help to combat the stifling of potentially meaningful discourse. We can all learn from one another.

Very sorry I could not make it...was looking so forward to it. I had a root canal at 4pm and was in too much pain (I'm allergic to pain meds...)! Hope to meet you all at the next one. Peace!

It was great to meet all of you! Next time I will be much less jet lagged, which will probably make contributing to the discussion much easier :).

Thank (all of!) you so much for showing up tonight. Apologies for the close quarters and the long discussion (though I'm delighted folks had so much to say). We talked a bit about some future book possibilities at the very end, but please message me if you have any other suggestions, and I will try to make a poll in the next couple days.

I didn't enjoy it so much. It seemed unfocused and not queer enough.

I'm going to do my best to make it. I'm relocating to SF from NYC tomorrow (AHHHH!), and I'm gonna try to read as much of the book as I can on the plane. I'm really glad that this sort of book club exists :-).
