I did this 2-day snowshoeing to Elfin Lakes a couple of weeks ago and it was a lot of fun. There is a heated hut with bunk beds for up to 33 people in the middle of the mountains. The hut was so full when I was there and there were people sleeping on the floor and the tables. If we do this in the middle of the week, there is probably a lot less people.
This is a 22 kms return trip so we will hike up 11 kms on day 1, spend the night at the hut or you can tent outside if you want and then we will hike down 11 km the day after. The views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks are phenomenal! This hike is not for beginners though as it`s 11 km of snowshoeing each way and you have to carry your back pack with you.
Things to bring:
waterproof hiking boots
hiking poles(if you use them)
layers of clothing sleeping bag
headlamps (with extra batteries)
food for two days
water (at least 1.5L, we can boil snow in the hut as there is stove there)
backpack stove and pot if you plan to cook
tea, hot chocolate, coffee (if drink them)
your happy self!
Elfin Lakes is just past Squamish, about 1 hr and 15 minutes drive from Vancouver. If ever we go, I have a car and I can bring up to four people with enough room for backpacks and other stuff.
Really hope I can do this hike with other active and outdoor-loving queer people!
