Carlos Reygadas' "Post Tenebras Lux"

  • Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

Join us Saturday June 1 when we view Post Tenebras Lux, the latest film by the intensely visual Mexican director Carlos Reygadas.

"The new film by maverick Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas is his most personal and challenging work to date. Post Tenebras Lux (“After darkness, light” in Latin) is a disorienting, kaleidoscopic, and visually stunning vision of a family torn between compassion and violence. It completely divided audiences at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where Reygadas was awarded Best Director."

More info about the film program and its venue:

6:30 Purchase tickets at the YBCA Box Office (701 Mission St. at Third), then meet for conversation at Peets Coffee, on the corner of Mission and Third St.

7:10 Return to the Yerba Buena and take our seats in YBCA’s film theater. The film starts at 7:30.

9:30 After the program we will meet for conversation at The Coffee Bean, 773 Market at 4th St.

This film by Reygadas was visually stunning, although its narrative structure was often deliberately disorienting. There were many unforgetable scenes, some disturbing, some quite touching. Yerba Buena is to be commended for presenting this film.

An angle to consider is the relativistic aspect of the movie. What if we were to view it from the perspective of a Mexican who has a much stronger relationship to God, Lucifer, and the Bible than us -- who inhabit a secular wasteland? Is Reygadas boldly attacking religion? Or is he affirming it? The biggest hint there is Reygadas' purposeful injection of pure unadulterated tacky exposition -- the Devil -- but even then he leaves us guessing.

Biblical title source (Job) (Calvinist undertones --seven deadly sins?). Conte morale /updated morality play with autobiographical elements. Interesting visually.
