Antero Alli's Hysteria, with director in personJoin us the evening of September 11 at Artists Television Access for a rare screening of Berkeley-based filmmaker Antero Alli's powerful post-9/11 film,
Hysteria.
"During the Serb-Croatian war a young soldier and devout Catholic unwittingly drinks tea made from the hallucinogenic datura flower and experiences what he believes to be a visitation from the Virgin Mary. In this religious vision, he receives a dangerous mission which he takes to heart and travels to post-9/11 America -- Oakland, California -- to fulfill. While preparing for his apotheosis, two Persian sisters who live next door surreptitiously involve themselves with him towards potentially disastrous results. As one critic writes, "
Hysteria is a profound and frequently disturbing work of intelligence that forces viewers to weigh in on emotional issues that haunted America as a result of the tragic events of 9/11, the damage created by religious dogma, the terror in dealing with inner fears, and the inability to justify a societal mind frame built on a foundation of selfish behavior." The film "solidifies Antero Alli's place among the most talented contemporary filmmakers. The superior level of artistry and honesty achieved in
Hysteria is so rare to find that this film can easily be classified as an instant classic."
