It has taken Coastkeeper about a year and a half to receive permission to run this pilot program. In May, the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved the request for a permit exemption, which is needed because current Orange County ordinance prohibits the public from boating, swimming or performing other water-related activities in rivers and channels owned by the Orange County Flood Control District.
The run is from the Gypsum Canyon bridge to the Yorba Linda bridge, approx. 2 miles. Class I-II with a lot of brush on the banks. Coastkeeper will provide one or two authorized guides for safety and control of the group on the water.
GEAR: you must furnish your own vessel, paddle and PFD. It is assumed that IKs, some brands of SOT’s, and maybe some hard-shells will qualify. The water level will be low, about 100 cfs, probably not enough to do a successful roll. Look at the photos (Link below) Please verify the suitability of your vessel with the TL.
WHERE TO MEET: Meet at the Fantasy Burger restaurant, 23761 La Palma Ave. Yorba Linda, CA 92887 at 8am for orientation and shuttle planning.
ATTENDANCE LIMIT: Based on the conditional use Permit obtained, only 8 persons total can go on this date, including the guide(s). Future events may be held later in September, so please be patient if this trip is filled up. (The permit period is Sept. 1 to Sept. 30). This will be first come first served.
COST: Coastkeeper is asking for a $25 tax-deductible donation from participants to go on this trip.
TRIP LEADER: To sign up for a trip, or get more information, please email [masked], or call the Coastkeeper office in Costa Mesa at[masked]-1965.
