Hello, After taking LA Parks dept canoe/kayak class a classmate and I paddled the lower Kern river for 3 days and had a blast.

(For Boat Owners) Please list the whitewater boats you own or use most often . enter None if you done't have one.

I own a Servalor inflatable 2 person canoe and a Klepper 2 person kayak that needs varnish redone. I think the canoe can do the lower Kern river that is class IV without a problem. The Klepper has aq hypalon skin but I don't know how suitable the wood frame is for rapids. I suspect Class III may be fine for with hypalon so tough. I bought both since the canoe fits in one large bag and the Klepper has three smaller bags to fit into small private owned airplanes, in a car or in my garage. I don't have a skirt for Klepper yet and need a second paddle. I recommend people going to the Kern river have dinner one night at a Basque restaurant in Bakersfield at least once.

(For Paddlers) How many times have you rafted? (e.g., 1-2, 4 or 5, 5-10, more than 10)

I rafted the Sacramento River North of Sacramento in my nephews raft. My canoe partner and I paddled a canoe. I believe we paddled the lower Kern 5 times the first day and 4 the next and one the last day.

4A-What is your experience level for rapids? (I.e., Class III, IV or V?); 4B- Do you own any personal WW gear, such as PFD, wet suit, neoprene booties, spray jacket, or large dry bag?

Experience is in a canoe level III on lower Kern River. Gear owned include: 2 person canoe & kayak 4 waterski PFD's I may need a new wetsuit Have 3-5 dry bags small - large & one mid size with pack straps on it. Believe one other has pack straps on it. Have video camera dry bag to shoot video on a boat or in rain. Have Teva like shoes with straps to not slide or be pulled off feet. Have 4 person tent, stainless cooking pots and assorted camping gear including candle lantern & LED lanterns. I don't know if a 5 gallon pail with pottie lid fits in a small canoes with camping gear but have one. Books about canoeing or kayaking in Artic Ocean, Canoeing with Cree Indians and article about a couple paddling from Montana to New Orleans in 90 days that sounds like fun. I know a woman that canoes in Sweden. I'm looking for more books and want to paddle some in Europe also. Have read of a waterway blocked by logs and paddler sucked under the logs.

(For Paddlers) Have you “swum a rapid”? .. How many times?…

Have never swam a rapid. Is there a safe place to do this as a group of 2-4 people?

(For Paddlers) Have you been on raft that capsized?

Have not rafted yet. I capsized intentionally for the canoe kayak class in a pool to right myself back upright as part of kayak training. But want to do again since that was around 15 years ago.

Hi Charles, I've only rented kayaks in the harbor in Santa Barbara, but there are several places where you can put kayak from the beach. Not sure about the 30 foot drop... that sounds crazy!

Wow, that is a huge undertaking as far as I am concerned. As I said earlier, I have never canoed or kayaked. I have done rowing twice and really loved it. I was told by the rowing instructor that I learn very quickly. Anyways, what you are thinking of doing is much bigger than what I am capable or willing to do at this time. So I wish you luck in finding the way and people to do it with.

I'm a little confused about your email. Are you asking me to go canoeing or kayaking tomorrow or Saturday? If so, I am sorry to let you know that I've already planned other things for this weekend. My weekend is full right now. And plus, I rather participate in the events with the meet-up, not one on one. Thank you for your offer.

Thank you Charles for the invitation to canoe, kayak, and sail. If I went on the trip that left today, it would have been my first time doing those activities. I have a high energy and I am sure I can learn them quite fast. One thing I can't do is sailing. I get motion sickness easily. I would love to hear from you when you have the next event scheduled. Thanks again.
