Let's talk testing!

We're super productive with Rails and JavaScript MVC libraries, but it seems harder than ever to write tests for our apps. I'd be happy to talk about my experience going from a chaotic test-free environment to full TDD, the times when testing is useful and when it's wasteful, and the tools and techniques I use to test-drive Rails + Backbone apps on a daily basis.

Is this interesting to folks? Is Wednesday a good night?

Hi all! Thanks for your hospitality and inviting me to speak on such short notice. My slides, slightly modified, are at http://www.slideshare.net/keithrbennett/jruby-synergyofrubyandjava. Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to explore JRuby further, or for anything else.

You guys have a great group, I wish I lived here! :)

Jason, great talk. Thanks for tolerating all my questions. ;)

(boy, this form is pretty limited in length! :) I'm really happy to answer any questions or have discussions online about the topic. Sorry we didn't get to the more meaty tech details about JS testing, but I hope that the slides have some useful links for folks at that stage.

For counter-arguments to TDD value, I came across "Making Software" on O'Reilly the other day http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596808303.do that, among many other topics, takes a critical view on "Does TDD work?" Haven't read it yet, but it's in my list now.

    Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for the chance to speak last Friday, I really enjoyed meeting and discussing with everyone. What a great group!

My slides on testing are online at http://jayunit.net/rails-js-testing-talk/. Definitely check out the resources at the end. Some folks asked great questions about our larger process and how testing fits in. We've tried to distill and share our process in the thoughtbot Playbook http://playbook.thoughtbot.com

It was a great talk about testing. Now we are starting digging into Cucumber.

Good talks! A bit too introductory perhaps, would've liked to see more implementation details.

    So inspire.

    Test before code!!

As this is the topic I'm interested in, it's fantastic! Want to hear more and more about testing. Unluckily, I can stay only for the first part T_T. One thing to note, imo, i think glowfish room is a bit too big. The speaker must cover a wide area which I think it is hard for him/her to do. Also, in case that if the mic was not used, like last night, even Jason's voice is loud, it is, sometimes, a bit hard to listen for a non-native like me. Anyway, thank Jason and every body for this splendid event!

Hey, all, I arrived in BKK last night and plan to see you all tonight. Is there a Java meetup or user group we might tell about the JRuby talk?

Happy news, thoughtbot is sponsoring drinks afterwards - I've asked Jan to recommend a venue.

The meetings might be quite different now. Last meeting was radically different, big professional venue for presentations, and 34 people showed up! (I know because there were 36 chairs and only 2 empty!). There was pizza, and I think we were there until about 10pm or so. It was wednesday though, and everyone scattered home afterwards I believe.

Almost certainly yes, especially if it winds up being Friday ;-)

    April 13, 2012

  • Jason M.

Also, what are the meetings usually like? Do folks go out for drinks afterwards?

    April 13, 2012

  • Jason M.

Sure, I'll be around the 19th and 20th. Shall we move to Friday the 20th?

    April 13, 2012

  • Jan J.

Im out of town too, any chance we could move to the 19th or 20th?

    April 13, 2012

  • Zack S.

    Wow 90 members!!!

Ironically, I'm out of town for April 17-19 so even though it works for Jason, it doesn't work for me :P

We are using jasmine / sinon for our fronted stuff and rspec / capybara for all the backend server side stuff, would love to discuss this topic with you :)

Can we do Apr 18? My Thai visa up on the 27th, so the 25th would be cutting it a little close - I'd like time to follow up & hang out with folks in the days after the meetup if possible.
