Pay it forward day 2014 kindness convoy

On the 24th of April, citizens of the world will take part in the annual international movement known as Pay it Forward Day. Inspired by the novel, "Pay it Forward" which was authored by Catherine Ryan Hyde, and the 2000 movie starring Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment—Pay it Forward Day began in Australia in 2007.

So the day's concept... if you haven't tweaked, is to help others. And instead of expecting something in return, you ask the recipients to pass the kindness on to more folks—to pay it forward.

On this day you can partake in your own way, by performing random acts of kindness of your own accord such as: - Help a co-worker start his/her day by treating him/her to a cup of coffee. - Offer your seat to another passenger. - Offer to pay for a random persons lunch - Pay for someone's petrol

This event however is for us to get together as a group, to form a kindness convoy, and march from Fed square to the state library issuing small gifts to random strangers and asking that they "pay it forward"! I will also try and organise some music (song recommendations welcome) to play on a loud portable music player and entertainers who would be willing to donate their time and help us spread some happiness and love to the city of Melbourne!!

This is a Meetup initiative to form this convoy, although the idea of Pay it Forward day has been in Australia since 2007, this will be the first mass congregation of Pay it Forwarders.

Ideas for gifts on the day:

• Buy a bunch of flowers and hand out individual flowers to people.

• If it's raining buy an extra umbrella to give to someone

• Buy a bag of chocolates or candy to hand out

• Run into a shop and pay for someone's coffee

• There are so many things we could do! Please suggest more!

Please start the pay it forward process now and share this event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/403509953055305

I want to make this a big annual thing!

Thanks to those who came! I enjoyed the event so much. It was great to meet some lovely people and see the priceless reactions of the people on the street! There was a very touching moment when we brought a woman to tears after she had been having a REALLY tough day... Let's do this again very soon!

Reminder that this is starting at 5:30 now! I can not update the event as I am not listed as host.

Thankyou to those who have updated your RSVP if you can no longer attend.

We will meet at the stage at fed square at 5:30 (if there is an event on the stage we will meet at the front of the 7-11) and then start walking no later than 5:45, I will have some music, but we will see how everyone feels, it might be better to go low key and maybe split into two groups to go down each side of the street.

Hey Emma. If you are finding cost an issue (although if you mean tram fare I totally get it) my plan is to write up little lovely notes to give to people. Costs nothing, and still as nice I think. :)

Thanks Alisha! But unfortunately I've had something come up that's preventing me to participate. Have a great event guys :-). Hope to meet you in the near future.

Ok, due to receiving many requests, time has been changed from 4:30 to 5:30 :-)

So we will start at 5.30 and finish around 6.30, then go somewhere for a drink after that.

Who's bringing what to give out to people? I am thinking to hand out flowers or something.

I am unable to be in the city at that time, but I will perform random acts at that time. Would be great if you post the JPEG Alisha as then I could use the same ones

Much as I love the ideas behind this group I think I have too much going on at the moment to give this the time it deserves. Good luck everyone and have a blast.

I have had a few people tell me 4:30 is too early, What do you guys think about making the start time a bit later? Probably don't want to start later than 6pm, and maybe make it just 1 hour. Thoughts?

Unfortunately I will be in hospital on April 24th...so cant make it along this time ;-(

Ive had an idea though. Im wanting to get some cards printed so that by performing a random act of kindness - we give a card to that person and ask them to pay it forward and pass on the card to the next person....what do you think??? Mez

p.s. hope all goes well at hospital

      January 25, 2014

    • Alisha

      Hey Mez, I will be doing up some for the free coffees and posting them in here as a jpeg (and via email as a PDF) to everyone, but what sort of message would you like on a more generic card? Something like;

"Someone from the Random Acts of Kindness - Melbourne group has just done something that they hope will brighten your day! Please feel free to be inspired and pay the favour forward. :)

Will this start at 4:30PM sharp? Don't think I'll be able to get off work earlier than 5PM.
