Invitation to Japanese Shin-Nen-Kai New Year's Celebration

From: Rocky Iwashima, President of the Nippon Club of the Triangle
To: Japan/Japanese-Related Organizations in the Triangle Area of North Carolina New Year's is an especially spiritual time of year for Japanese, when individuals, families, relatives, and friends get together to part with the previous year and welcome the fortunes of the New Year. In order to celebrate and share in the spirit of the event, we will hold a traditional Japanese New Year's Celebration, called a "Shin-Nen-Kai" among the members of the Japan-related Organizations of the Triangle Area. We plan to include elements of traditional customs and rituals that signify Japanese New Year. Food will be served in a buffet-style.

  • Traditional Japanese cuisine is served including Chirashi-sushi, Nikujaga, Kamaboko, etc.
  • Kagamiwari (ceremonial opening of casks of Sake, often held as a symbol for new beginnings) and Taru-style tasting.
  • Mochitsuki (pounding Mochi, rice cake)
  • Koto, Shinobue (traditional Japanese music), and piano performance
  • Kiyari-Uta (traditional Japanese work song)
We would be pleased if you could join in our Japanese New Year's Celebration. Spouses and guests are more than welcome. Please see the bottom of the page for details of the event. We look forward to hearing from you. Warmest regards,
Rocky Iwashima
