Fire and Water: The Apocalyptic Imagination of Hayao Miyazaki

Special guest lecturer Professor Susan Napier (Tufts University, Japanese Language and Literature) will explore the artistic productions of Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away). Napier is the author of Anime from Akira to Princess Mononoke: Experiencing Contemporary Japanese Animation, as well as From Impressionism to Anime: Japan as Fantasy and Fan Cult in the Western Imagination.

Napier's talk will be followed by a screening of Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies (1988) at 7:00 PM.

Free and open to the public.
