I am studying Japanese for several reasons. I plan on visiting Japan in 2016, and would like to be able to survive and hopefully thrive on my trip without a word of English being needed. I have a few friends and acquaintances in Japan and I'd like to correspond with them in Japanese at some point, and as a civil engineer with a love of railroads, civil infrastructure, architecture, and landscaping, Japan offers many many fascinating things to study. Onsens sound delightful, I've heard good things about the skiing in Japan, and I love seafood - including and especially sushi. And I love Nodame Cantabile and related Japanese shows, and it would be nice to not need the subtitles.
I love this meetup! Any level of Japanese is welcome, and there are plenty of people who can and are willing to help you improve your Japanese. Who come varies a little bit, but in my experience there are usually a couple of native Japanese speakers who as well as plenty of learners. Topics of conversations range from the Japanese language to the Japanese history to the latest movies, books, comedians, economics, culture, science, politics, travel stories, and just about anything. It's great fun!
