Originally, I began studying Japanese for family reasons--my late wife Yasuko was Japanese and since most of her family did not speak English, I needed to learn the language in order to communicate with them. As for culture, I like Japanese cuisine of all kinds (kaiseki, teishoku, kateiryouri, osechi, and, of course, sushi), the natural beauty and rhythm of life of rural Japan, and contemporary Japanese culture expressed via modern art, music, and film. I love singing karaoke (especially J-POP; YUI's music is one of my favorites). I want to join this group because I'm looking to meet new people who share an interest in Japanese language and culture, and for an opportunity to improve my Japanese language proficiency up to advanced-intermediate (JLPT N2 level or so), particularly in conversation and listening ability.
My name is Arthur. Recently moved here from NYC. Biotech scientist/manager by profession. Was married to a Japanese woman for 15 years (she passed away in 2011). Intermediate proficiency in Japanese (passed the JLPT N3 exam in Dec 2013).
A good group. Members are energetic and animated in conversation, and interested in Japanese language and culture.
