Camping Trip - Hanging Rock State Park

How about a weekend of trail running, hiking, climbing, canoeing, swimming and more in "the mountains away from the mountains?"  Hanging Rock State Park is only a 2-hour drive from Umstead and offers miles of trails with beautiful mountain views and waterfalls.

Campsite Information

I have reserved 3 group campsites.  Each site allows up to 16 guests and 4 vehicles. For now, we'll have an "adults only" site and one that is "kid-friendly"  and can adjust our reservation when we have a better count of who is attending.   Individual campsites are also available for $17 per night, plus registration fee, and hold up to 6 people and 2 vehicles.

The group sites are $13 per night,  + $2 per night per additional person over the minimum number (5) allowed at the site.   Confusing, right?  It'll probably cost $5 or less per person to stay at the group site for the weekend.

Trails

"More than 18 miles of wooded passageways form a network of 12 trails at Hanging Rock State Park. Picturesque cascades and waterfalls, high rock cliffs, spectacular views of the rolling Piedmont and Blue Ridge Mountains, and a mountain cave are just a few of the rewards of exploring by foot."

Canoeing and Kayaking

The Dan River Company, located a few miles from Hanging Rock State Park, offers canoe and kayak rentals on the Dan River.   The cost is $60 per canoe for  two people, $5 per additional person, for a 6 mile run (about 2-2.5 hrs).  Kayaks are $40 for a single-person kayak.  A 13 mile run is also available.  I will check to see if we are eligible for a group rate.  For more information, visit: http://www.danrivercompany.com/rates_reservations.htm

Other Details

Check-in time is at 4:00pm and the gates close at 9:00pm.  Check-out is 3:00pm. When you RSVP, please indicate whether you will be joining us for Friday night, Saturday night, or both nights.  Please also mention if you're interested in joining us for the canoe trip, which I suggest we schedule for late Saturday morning.

All updates and additional information will be posted to this page.

Hope to see you there!!

We are group campsites 1, 2, and 3. I would suggest filling up #1 and #2 first, we might not even need 3.

Our group campsites have a picnic table and fire pit, but no grill. Does anyone plan on bringing a grill tomorrow. I'll have a single burner camp stove.

Does anyone have a portable pump for an air mattress? The one we've got requires an electrical outlet.

I think it should work. The valve is pretty big, diameter a bit less than a quarter.

The lake will be open for swimming on Saturday, so remember to bring your swimwear and towel, etc if you plan on heading down to the lake. Also, water shoes (or any footwear you can get wet that won't fall off) would be a good idea if you plan on going on the canoe/kayak trip. Maybe a hat, too.

The group camp is separate from the larger family campground, so we'll have to drive to the showers (about a mile). On a positive note, it'll be more private, so unless the other two group sites are occupied by girl scout troops, we shouldn't have to worry about noise or filters.

I made the reservation for the canoe trip on Saturday, May 31st, for the 1:00pm 6.5 mile float (check-in at 12:30pm). We have five canoes for ten people: Me, Alexis, Alana (and guest), Mary, Jeff, Terry, Chapel, Brian and Allison. They only have one more canoe available for 1:00pm, so if you are still on the fence, now is the time to pull the trigger. You could also rent a kayak if they run out of canoes. The canoes will be $60 each ($30 per person). We would need ten vessels for the 10% discount.

Hi everyone! I'll be posting some updates here in the next week or two, but also sending more specific details through email. This will go out to the email address you use for meetup.com. If there is a better way to reach you, please send your preferred contact info to [masked], or call/text me at[masked]-3460. I'll be reserving the canoes next week, so if you were planning on taking the canoe trip, please let me know. I was thinking about late Saturday morning/noon. I think the last float is around 1:00 or 2:00. This would give us enough time for a morning trail run and allow those who might come up Saturday morning to join us. If you have any suggestions about the time, or the camping trip in general, feel free to share.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!!
