What we're doing

We did these rides last year as a way to keep the legs active on the weekends that we have to schlep the kids to and fro so I thought we would repeat them again this year. The plan is to ride every other weekend throughout the spring, summer, and fall. While we won't be racing, and there will opportunities to stop along the way, I want to keep a steady pace of 12 - 15 MPH once we get moving.

We will use the Nashua River Rail Trail, which is a former railroad right of way that travels about 12 miles from end-to-end through the towns of Ayer, Groton, Pepperell and Dunstable and part of Nashua. It offers a 10-foot wide paved surface for the entire length and travels along a varied landscape offering numerous scenic overlooks and opportunities to see wildlife.

Guests are not permitted - all participants must be members of the Random Group of Hikers.

Trip Summary

The objective is to ride at about a 12 - 15 MPH pace. There will be two options for this trip – an 8 mile round trip and a 24 mile round trip. Both options will end near Charlotte’s Cozy Kitchen in Pepperell so we can finish the event off with an ice cream.

We will start at the eight-mile mark of the overall route and head north to Nashua before returning to the starting point. If eight miles is enough for you then you can end your trip here. The rest of us will continue south towards Ayer before returning to the starting point. This should be about 24 miles round trip.

While I have been on this trail many times before I did all of my current research for this trip using the Internet. You should become familiar with this information since you are ultimately responsible for your own safety.

Weather

Unlike hiking, biking is no fun in the rain. Dangerous weather conditions will cancel. I will post an update and/or send an email to all confirmed participants a day or two ahead of time. We will assess travel and weather conditions during the ride and make changes to our planned trip as necessary.

Clothing, Gear, Equipment, and Supplies

Below is a list describing the minimum items required to participate in this event.

  • Helmet: You must wear a properly sized and adjusted bicycle helmet that has been tested and meets the uniform safety standard issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
  • Other Essential Gear: Liquids to stay hydrated and food to stay nourished. White headlight and red taillight if we will be riding before sunrise or after sunset. A multi-purpose tool or small repair kit. A spare tube.

Do not rely on others to have extra items to share with you at the meeting spot or on the trail. You should know how to use all of your equipment - test and adjust it prior to this trip.

If you don't have what you need you will not be allowed to participate - even if you carpooled with someone.

Directions

We will begin by meeting in the dirt parking lot behind the 7-Eleven Convenience Store on the northeast side of Route 113 in Pepperell, MA. According to Google Maps this meeting spot is about 45 miles from Boston and it should take about 1 hour to drive there.

    Another Saturday ride means another rainy Saturday, but much like that last time we weren't deterred. We managed to get in about 18 miles today before ending the ride. Not as wet and dirty this time but wet through and through - broke out the waterproof gloves and rode wearing a rain jacket. Even though wet, not cold. Besides no bugs an added bonus of riding in the rain - no people either. we had the trail to ourselves. I am starting to think that Jim has a rain cloud over his head.

    The weather forecast for tomorrow looks like the one we had for the last ride - crappy. Showers. Patchy fog between 9am and 10am. High near 54. North wind 10 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. The last time we changed the day and the original day actually turned out to be the better of the two so I am hoping history repeats itself - we will still try to ride on Saturday. Be prepared to get wet (and wear something you don't mind getting dirty). You may also want to bring something dry to change into since your butt and back will get wet.
