=====

What we're doing

We will be climbing Carter Dome (4832 Ft) then onto Mt Hight (4675 Ft)

We start as a group, hike as a group, and finish as a group. Our pace will be that of the slowest hiker. This trip isn't for you if you are faster than the group and don't want to stay with us, if you want to head off on your own, or if you are slower than the group and expect us to constantly wait for you.

Guests are not permitted - all participants must be members of the Random Group of Hikers.

Dogs are not permitted

Trip Summary

On this moderate pace (~1.5 MPH) out and back trip we will hike about 10.22 miles and climb about 3,722 feet. It should take an average hiker about 6 hours 58 minutes to complete this trip (this doesn't include time for rest/food breaks). I'm planning on 8 hours 45 minutes.

This event is considered to be INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED because of the pace, distance, and elevation gain. We could alter our plans because of fatigue, weather, and/or other conditions and there is no guarantee that we will complete the entire event as described here (i.e. we might not reach the summit).

I did my research using the Appalachian Mountain Club's "White Mountain Guide", a trail map, and the Internet. You need to become self-reliant by becoming familiar with the route, terrain, and potential hazards since you are ultimately responsible for your own safety.

Weather

Mountain weather is subject to rapid changes and extreme conditions. Dangerous weather conditions will cancel - I will post an update and/or send an email to all confirmed participants a day or two ahead of time. We will assess travel and weather conditions during the hike and make changes to our planned trip as necessary.

Clothing, Gear, Equipment, and Supplies

Hiking safely is about being prepared so that you can respond to an emergency situation or spend a night in the woods if you have to. Failure to bring the basics puts you and the rest of the group at risk. If you don't know what to wear and/or bring with you or have any questions either refer to the list below or contact me.

  • Click for a list of items needed for a day hike (Appalachian Mountain Club)
  • Snowshoes and microspikes are required.
  • Crampons or Mountaineering snowshoes may be needed to get to the top of Mt Hight.

Do not rely on others to have extra items to share with you at the meeting spot or on the trail. You should know how to use all of your equipment - test and adjust it prior to this trip.

If you don't have what you need you will not be allowed to participate - even if you carpooled with someone!

DIRECTIONS

We will be meeting at Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead on the east side of Route 16 north of the Pinkham Notch Visitors Center. According to Google Maps this spot is about 158 miles from Boston and it should take about 3 hours 14 minutes to drive there.

While carpooling is encouraged you are responsible for coordinating your own rides. Use the comments section below to communicate with others who may also be looking to share a ride. If you do share a ride be sure to share the expenses - suggested donations per person are $20 from Boston MA, $15 from Salem/Nashua NH, and $10 from Concord NH.

A great day on the mountain! Although the clouds blocked the views, the trail was beautiful on it's own. It was fun seeing folks I've hiked with before as well as making some new hiking buddies. Put this one in the books as another fantastic day with great peeps!

Lots of snow and warm(er) temps made for a really nice day in the Mountains (despite the fact that the clouds were blocking our view). The many "whirlpools" made up for the the cloudy skies and everyone seemed to have a good time. Thanks John for organizing the hike! Hope to see everyone again.

Awesome day in the teens with no wind!!! Thanks everyone for making it a fun, invigorating, and stress free day! Great seeing people I've hike with and meeting new Randomites. We didn't summit Mt Hight as the trail was not broken out and there would have been no views. Snow coverage is great, we had to work getting around Hight to pack down the trail but it was well worth it.

Hight's loop section of the C-M Tr wasn't broken out yesterday, but we tracked CD Tr, and the leading up part of CD Tr. Up and over the Dome from either way is now broken out (two sets of tracks, but it helps).

Can't make it on the 16th, bummer! But it's probably a good idea to cancel this weekend. Stay safe & warm everyone!

Seems the prudent thing to do. I'll miss hiking with you all, next weekend, as the opposite weekend is for my boys.

      February 7, 2013

    • Jessica

Sounds great see u all next weekend! Maybe we will have some nice new snow to hike on!

      February 7, 2013

Sorry, John. I'll be away that weekend. Hopefully hike with you sometime this winter!

    February 7, 2013

  • John (LAG) L.

Hi All, I'm tracking the weather now and will know better tomorrow. Right now they are stating 12" with a possible 24" depending on the track from Friday afternoon through Saturday. I'll keep everyone posted. Hiking is not as much an issue as the driving will be.

If I do this I'll be heading up to Laconia on Friday. Even using Laconia as a launching point, I know it's going to take A LOT longer to get to the trailhead. I'd definitely bail on this one were I coming from Boston. Knowing what the roads are going to be like up there, my current leaning is to bail due to road conditions. I'd also love to see the date moved to next week. Good to see a nice storm coming through though, we really need it. The trails were completely baron last week at lower altitudes on the Twins->Galehead->Garfield hike.

FYI: If I do cancel this Saturday I'm rescheduling for next Saturday. I make the call tomorrow around 5pm when they have a better handle on it.

Looks like getting out of Boston in the early AM will be the issue with the weather. I'm leaving from Somerville, and could potentially drive if the snow isn't too deep - I have a small, old car...

    February 6, 2013

    • Jessica

I'm coming from mid western nh lebanon area so it will be a choice when to leave...

Has anyone put Any thought into weather that is on it's way?

    February 6, 2013

Cory, Monica stayed in a Hostel in Conway, www.conwayhostel.com I believe. Cheaper than a hotel if no one else pitches in.

I plan on driving up on Friday afternoon and will stay in a motel somewhere. I have room for others if that works out. Wouldn't mind sharing a room to cut costs. I live in Newton. Easier to call my cell at[masked]-6260. Happy trails!
