****IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS****

I've added a file with an alternate plan when we have a large turnout of volunteers.  See: http://files.meetup.com/482512/Large%20Groups%20at%20Ashford%20Hall.rtf

1) As of July 2012, residents request: please, no more bar soap.

2) Reminder: As of February, 2011 Ashford Hall no longer allows food donations (fruits, candies, cookies, cakes, and drinks) from us.

*********************************************************************************

Dear RAK Members,

Ashford Hall, a skilled nursing facility is designed to provide residents with the care and assistance needed to enjoy life. Volunteering at AH is unlike any other volunteer experience you have ever had. As a group, we enrich the lives of frail or isolated seniors and/or adults, through support and friendship, during friendly visits. We also provide music and Bingo game for the residents. This is a very kid friendly event. The residents love kids and dogs.

As always your presence is very valuable. Seniors really enjoy visiting with us and when it comes to organizing the prizes and helping out with bingo, or lugging stuff out to Dave's car, singing with the Darlings, the more the merrier. We also realize that our volunteers come from all walks of life; among us are students, job-seekers, and so on. Not everyone can afford to buy prizes but all volunteers are welcome and valued.

But, if you'd like to donate, consider the upcoming month's theme.  It could be a holiday, like Thanksgiving for November or Valentines Day for February, or it could be related to the season of the year. Of course, you're always welcome to bring any affordable and appropriate gifts for the seniors.  See the "Files" section, where I posted a list on February 5.

NOTE ABOUT WHAT WE DO: We meet in the lobby. Then volunteers visit with residents in their rooms for a while, followed by a bingo game for them in the game room. Some volunteers also sing to the residents with Dave's Darlings. Volunteers fill prize bags. We also sit at tables with the residents during bingo, help them mark their bingo cards and pick up their prizes for them when they win.

NOTE ABOUT ARRIVING LATE:
You can catch up to us. The typical schedule:
1) 1:00-1:15 Meet in foyer
2) 1:15: Visit rooms or set up for bingo in atrium
3) 1:45: Music in atrium if others sing
4) 2:05: Bingo begins; if we have singers they go to Alzheimers ward
5) 3:00: Finish bingo, group photo, pack up
6) 3:20-4:30? Optional late lunch at Danals or sometimes Taco Cabana if we have dogs along.

NOTE TO THOSE WANTING TO BRING A DOG OR CAT:Ashford Hall has to have copies of up to date shot records for them. Of course, the dog should have the right temperament for visiting with residents.

NOTE TO THOSE TAKING PHOTOS: Photography is welcome at Ashford Hall, and pictures of other volunteers, the facility, the prizes, and so on are totally acceptable. However, we need to remember to respect the privacy of the residents whom we are helping to serve. Please refrain from taking pictures of the clients, volunteers with residents, and so on. If you accidentally include someone, you can crop that person out or use programs such as photoshop or paint.net (free) to blur the face before posting to meetup, Facebook, or other sites. A how-to for blurring faces can be found in the Files section.

OPTIONAL:
Some of us go for lunch afterward at nearby, reasonably priced Danals.  Come join us for Tex Mex if you like!  http://maps.google.com/maps?rlz=1C1TSNK_enUS441US441&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=danals+irving+tx&fb=1&gl=us&hq=danals&hnear=0x864e825c1d09f58f:0x3c306f568687f309,Irving,+TX&cid=0,0,12442865870013761232&ei=O6GdT_erN4PM2AXQt6CpAg&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&resnum=4&ved=0CBkQ_BIwAw

Hi! :) Can someone please advise if we need to bring or buy anything to help out?

Small blankets (for use while watching TV etc.)
We've had numerous DVDs donated and given away; last I checked there was a DVD player connected to the big screen in the atrium, so they *do* have a way to watch them in there. Some of course may also have players in their rooms. If so, books on CD might be nice.

      Wal Mart card
Maybe McDonald's gift certs for their trips to Wal Mart (the one on Airport Fwy has a McDonald's inside)?

      General:
Prize bags; something not brown (white is ok, patterned is great), a bit bigger than a lunch sack. Colors or some way to differentiate for men's/women's prize bags would be good.

At one time Ashford had soda machines so a lot of people donated quarters. Last I knew the machines were removed. Maybe they will be replaced one day and quarters will be useful as prizes again.
