Love For Kids Annual Christmas Party!

UPDATE

Greetings, All!

Just an almost-last-minute reminder about this Saturday's big Love For Kids Christmas Party! If you haven't already signed up both on this RAK page and also at the Love For Kids web site, at http://loveforkidsinc.org/annual-christmas-party/, right now would be a good time to do that. If, because of the late date, you don't receive your registration/waiver form, http://loveforkidsinc.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Volunteer-Waiver-Xmas-Party.pdf ,from LFK in time, no worries.  There will be plenty of blank forms that morning at the Volunteer Registration Table, which will be just outside the main building at the Circle R Ranch (just to the left, as you face the front of the building).

If you’ve been to this wonderful event at least a couple of times before, and therefore “sorta, kinda” know your way around the Circle R Ranch, and you would like to be one of my “greeters” (to welcome and direct not just our 3800 kids, but also our one thousand or so volunteers!), please be there by 8:00 Saturday morning and look for me. (I’ll be wearing a white, heart-shaped “LFK Director” name badge and a bright red, silly-looking Santa hat.) And if you’ve already volunteered to be, or would like to be, a parking volunteer, please also be there by 8:00. Otherwise, please arrive between 8:30 and 9:00, and no later than 9:15, because – trust me – you do not want to arrive at the same time as the many buses that will be bringing our young guests to the Ranch, usually starting around 9:30.

Many RAK volunteers will be wearing Mardi Gras beads at the Christmas Party, so keep an eye out for them, and if you've got 'em, bring 'em! And all Random Acts volunteers are asked to write "RAK" at the bottom of your name tags, so that we can more readily find one another.

After we've waved good-bye to the last of the many busloads of young partiers, and before we go inside for the volunteer appreciation lunch, let's plan to have all RAK volunteers meet just in front of the walkway into the main building at the Ranch, for a group photo.

The high temperature on Saturday afternoon should be in the mid to upper 70’s, and about 60 when we first arrive that morning, so dressing warm won’t be quite the concern it’s been in some recent years.   :-)

Come prepared to have a great time, to be moved by the appreciation of our young guests, and to feel proud of yourself for doing what you can to help fill a great need!

On behalf of the Love For Kids, Inc., Board of Directors, with warm regards and sincere thanks,

Tony Mauro

Assistant Organizer, RAK

Director, LFK

This was my first time being a part of the Annual Kid's Party...such an Amazing event for precious darling children and the organizational scope of an event of this magnitude is most impressive. I loved it and feel grateful to have been a part of the fun!

I created a sign for us to use for saving tables but apparently it takes Meetup a little while to finish it. I need to head out there. If anyone has a chance to make some copies and bring them out that would be awesome.

    December 7, 2012

    • Lance P.

We tried to put all of the necessary info in the description. If there is anything specific you need please let us know. Thanks for volunteering!

      December 7, 2012

  • Tony M.

Hi, Debbie. Our more than 100 RAK volunteers will be working at many different activities, so there are no plans to meet up as a group either before or during the Christmas Party. Afterwards, as you already know from the update above, we'll be meeting for a group photo in front of the main building, and after that, after we're done waving good-bye to the kids and cleaning up all the trash, we'll try to sit together as a group at the Volunteer Appreciation Lunch! Before that, we can find one another by keeping an eye out for two things: the Mardi Gras beads that many Random Acts folks will be wearing, and the letters "RAK" on people's name tags. Make sure that you have both, and even if you don't find some of us (since there may well be more than a thousand volunteers), we may find you!
    See you there!

    December 7, 2012

    • Tony M.

Yes, definitely, but please let the folks at the Volunteer Registration Table know that when you check in, so that they can assign you accordingly and also arrange for someone to relieve you at noon. And when you report to your volunteer activity, please also let the leader there know when you'll have to leave. Thanks, Janelle, for volunteering!

      1 · December 7, 2012

    • Lance P.

One note in addition to what Tony said above. LFK usually has an area where volunteers can get coffee, donuts, OJ, etc. and mingle for a little while before going to the assigned shifts. We won't be meeting there as a group but some of us will be greeting people and you'll see a lot of volunteers with RAK on their name tags.

What time should we get there

    December 7, 2012

    • Tony M.

Hi again. All the information you'll need is in the update and the original announcement above. Please be sure to read them before heading out to the Circle R Ranch! See you in the morning!

      December 7, 2012

  • Tony M.

Think positive, Chris. And please remember that the details (how many volunteers "actually show up," which organizations sent the most volunteers, etc.) are not important. What IS important is our young guests. What IS important is what we do and why we do it. As Woodrow Wilson once said, “You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.” And as Janice Maeditere said, "Christmas is not so much about opening our presents as about opening our hearts." Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Chris, and also to ALL of our wonderful and caring volunteers!

    2 · December 7, 2012

  • Tony M.

Actually, Chris, the reason that the LFK volunteer signup page has been closed IS that we reached our quota of volunteers! (As I said earlier, what a wonderful problem to have!) That's why I've been urging RAK volunteers to sign up at LFK's web site, not just on RAK's event page. The list that you refer to can be (and has been) printed out without having to close that signup page. And believe it or not, it's NOT necessarily true that "there are never TOO many volunteers!" We've had LFK events, including at the Ranch, where we did have too many volunteers, and some were understandably unhappy because there wasn't enough for them to do. (Needless to say, we do NOT want any of our volunteers to be unhappy.) In any case, the reality is that not everyone who signs up on the LFK site actually shows up, so you, Cindy, and Barb are absolutely correct in advising volunteers to join us on Saturday (hopefully with signed waiver forms in hand) whether or not they've "officially" signed up!

    2 · December 6, 2012

    • Tony M.

I apologize, Chris, but I'm not sure that I understand what it is about the facts I've provided that doesn't make sense to you. For example, I thought that my saying that the reason for closing LFK's volunteer signup page is that we had reached our goal of a thousand volunteers was fairly self-explanatory, but you've said that you "just didn't understand" what I meant by that. And I still believe that having more volunteers than we need is a much better problem to have than not having enough volunteers, so I'm just not getting why that's an issue for you. If you'd like, we can talk about all this in person on Saturday, if not during the Christmas Party ('cause we'll be plenty busy), then at our Volunteer Appreciation Lunch afterwards.

      1 · December 6, 2012

    • ChrisDes

Wow, so now I understand what you ment. LFK shut down its Registration site when IT reached 1,000. Always being the skeptic, I find that hard to believe (yet awesome if true!) 1,000 Volunteers? Let see how many actually show up. I know I always to.

    • Tony M.

Welcome to Random Acts of Kindness, Crystal, and thank you for volunteering to help out at this heartwarming event! We at Love For Kids are pleased and flattered that your very first RAK meetup will be our big Christmas Party. All of us at both RAK and LFK share your excitement! I'm looking forward to meeting you tomorrow. See you there!

      December 7, 2012

  • Lance P.

Please remember to write "RAK" on the bottom of your name tags so we can find each other easier. Also, after all the kids leave we will gather for a group picture and then sit together at tables. It's a lot of fun for the kids and volunteers to be outside when the kids arrive to greet them and give high fives. If you don't have to be in your assigned area at that time I highly encourage being out front to greet the kids. It's also great to be out in the front area as the kids leave to thank them for coming and then to wave as the buses leave. The kids really enjoy and appreciate that.

Tony: I doubt that they turned off the LFK Volunteer Signup page due to too many volunteers. Its just at some point they have to turn it off in order to create a list that they can then print out and bring to the event (but I'm guessing at this). Its rare that I presign up to Volunteer but noticed Wed. evening that its been turned off. Nonetheless, I too will simply show up and sign the waiver onsite (like I usually do). And I write this to encourage others to do the same! There are never TOO many Volunteers!

    December 6, 2012

    • ChrisDes

Of course, as I have done since 1989. Greeter, Parking Lot organizer, what ever, where ever needed.

    December 6, 2012

  • Barb

Sign up on the LFK website is closed but if you have not registered with them, please feel free to come out to help. Because of the late date, you can print the Volunteer “Release of Liability” form here and bring it with you or there will be plenty of blank forms that morning at the Volunteer Registration Table. http://loveforkidsinc.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Volunteer-Waiver-Xmas-Party.pdf
    THANK YOU ALL FOR VOLUNTEERING!

    December 6, 2012

  • Cindy

I talked to Teresa, who is in charge of volunteers, yesterday. They had reached enough volunteers, but she said that there will be waivers at the event and that volunteers that 'just' show up' will not be turned away.In fact, while we were talking, she realized that an idea she had would need more volunteers than she had originally planned. See you there!

    December 6, 2012

  • Tony M.

Hey, in an earlier posting (above), I mentioned needing a number of experienced "greeters" at 8:00 this Saturday morning to help me welcome and direct not only our 1000 volunteers, but also our 3800 kids and their 400 chaperones. If you'd like to do that, and have volunteered at the Circle R Ranch before, please let me know, either by a comment on this page or at [masked].
    Thanks very much!

I also have beads I can bring if needed. Just let me know.

    December 5, 2012

    • Tony M.

Thank you, Cathy! We'll likely have more than 100 Random Acts volunteers at the Christmas Party this Saturday, so yes, please do bring your beads, and please offer them to anyone with "RAK" on their name tags who isn't already wearing beads! And by the way, welcome to Random Acts of Kindness, and thank you for signing up for your first RAK meetup so soon after joining us!

Is volunteer love and love for kids the same organization, I did sign up at the love for kids site, but it shows that I sign up with volunteer lovr

    December 5, 2012

    • Tony M.

No, Jeed, Volunteer Love is a Meetup.com group, while Love For Kids is an incorporated 501(c)(3) charity. Both are wonderful organizations, and Volunteer Love has been a great supporter of LFK. If you signed up for the Christmas Party at the Love For Kids web site, it doesn't really matter if your group affiliation is Volunteer Love or RAK or LFK. All that matters is that you're there to help our young guests have a great time!

  • Tony M.

    Hi, Christmas Party volunteers!
So far, 110 of you have RSVP'd on this page to help out this Saturday, which is wonderful! Thank you so much! But as of yesterday (Monday) afternoon, only 43 volunteers (fewer than half) had designated RAK as our "group affiliation" on the Love For Kids web site!
Is that because the rest of you have NOT yet signed up at http://LoveForKidsInc.org/annual-christmas-party? If so, please remember that you MUST do that in order to volunteer this Saturday!!! Signing up only on this page is NOT sufficient!
Or is it because the rest of you HAVE signed up on the LFK web site, but simply did not designate RAK as your group affiliation? If so, it's not a big problem. Doing so is not required. It's just a matter of pride for our Random Acts of Kindness family. (Personally, I'd rather not see more Junior ROTC and Dallas Margarita Society volunteers listed than us.) :-)
In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing you guys this Saturday!
    Tony

I have 2 children and try to teach them to give back to their community, but how do I do this when they are hardly ever allowed to volunteer. In my opinion that is what is wrong with young kids today, we don't want to get them involved until they are middle teens then they all have attitudes.

Would love to help with events, but I'm a single mom & if my kids are able to help with your events, we will need to look elsewhere. Really hate this because I love the things your group does.

    1 · October 30, 2012

    • Barb

Cynthia, I'm sorry your children are not old enough to volunteer for the LFK Christmas Party. I think it is wonderful that you want to teach your children to give back! Here is a website that has volunteer opportunities for Parents & Children in the DFW area: http://communitykidsn...

      1 · October 30, 2012

    • Dave

Cynthia, there are other activities in the group that are "kid-friendly." We've had volunteers as young as a few weeks old at Ashford Hall, for example. If you check different events, I think you can find activities to get them involved (which I think is a great idea).
