Hungry for Change is mostly made up of interviews with health and nutrition advocates, explaining how so many people have been mislead in their quest for weightless and good health, following up with advice on how to get back on track.
The film features some alarming statistics about the public’s struggle with weight loss:

Watching this film you will learn a lot about the food industry and it’s main objectives to make profit through clever marketing, selling more food and increasing shelf lives. This has lead to an abundance of food-like products with misleading packaging, rather than the natural wholesome food that our bodies need. The film looks at how these food-like products are carefully designed to look and smell appealing, but in many cases they have low amounts of nutrients and high amounts of calories (fats and sugars) as well as many artificial ingredients which are no good for you. The film looks at the dangers of MSG, Aspartame and artificial sweeteners and raises huge concerns about diet soda.
Hungry for Change takes a good look at the sugar trap – sugar can be labelled “no fat” but it turns into fat in the body, it is found in many processed food products and leaves you craving more – emphasising that sugar is addictive (calling it the cocaine of the food world). The film reveals how junk food can make you feel good, but only momentarily – this quickly drops off and you are left feeling empty. Apparently this is by design, to make us buy more food. Sneaky!
Hungry for Change also explains why so many diets fail, saying that the whole dieting paradigm is flawed. It points out that the true meaning of the word diet is what a species habitually eats to sustain itself, not a temporary weight loss venture which manipulates the metabolism and often leaves people feeling deprived because they can’t have something. Today’s common diet (most supermarket food) includes a lot of artificial food and doesn’t resemble what humans are supposed to eat. The advice offered in the film is not to diet, but instead to start adding in all the good stuff (organic foods, plant foods, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables) and over time this will crowd out the bad stuff (processed food, sugars, bad fats). One of the experts in the film suggests that we avoid eating grains, but this is debatable – many nutrition experts recommend that natural whole grains are a vital part of a healthy diet.
