Opening Night Film - Sarasota Film Festival

Greetings, Raw Sarasota!

We got lucky!

I just received a call from the Sarasota Film Festival HQ & they have offered our group members two-for-one tickets for the opening night film, "Blackfish" that will be screened at the Van Wezel. Opening night is always exciting, with the filmmakers present on the red carpet, as well as national media. There will be a Q&A after the film.

This film is a documentary that considers animal rights, from the perspective of a killer whale at Sea World that has taken the lives of three people, including one of its trainers. It's a true story that explores the reality, and sometimes high cost, of keeping animals in captivity.

Purchase your tickets at the Film Festival box office at the Hollywood 20 Theater on Main Street in downtown. Be sure to tell them you're a member of Raw Sarasota and you'll get two tickets for $25, instead of one.

I look forward to seeing you there!

The film was interesting but too long. The debate was better, the atmosphere not the same as used to be at the Opera House (I personally like the location there better). I talked to one of the killer well trainers and I am surprised that no emergency rescue plan was in place at Sea World (in my opinion it is a management flaw)

I was very moved by the film & was glad to see such a large audience. Powerful & compelling case against keeping animals in captivity.

I was moved by the film as well. Especially the parts about the whale pods figuring out what the humans were doing, and splitting up to try to fool the Sea World hunters -- most of them going one way, and the mothers and children going the other. That was beyond heartbreaking, as was the accounting of the mother whale Sea World separated from her 4-year-old daughter -- how she was crying and shaking all over. Utterly horrific and heartbreaking.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
