How long have you been involved with photography in one way or another?

I've been involved in photography since I was ten years old. I've been actively involved in earning income from this passion for the past 6 or 7 years.

Please tell us a little about your experience with photography... are you a working professional photographer, an avid hobbyist/artist, or an eager novice with big plans?

I have a broad range of experience with photography on both professional and hobby levels. I have my own studio in Pioneer Square and I'm passionate about teaching and cultivating new photographers in the community.

Neil, I'm going to recommend some moisturizer, a little more sleep, and cut back on the smoking. But seriously, I'm looking at your portraiture class on Wednesday. I've not taken your studio lighting class, and have no studio lighting experience, although I've had a little scoolin' on the subject throughout the years. If the class is small enough to accommodate what questions I may have, and you are willing, let me know if I should consider this class.

Hey Neil,

Thanks for the reply...that sounds great! I'm definitely going to try to make it out ASAP and get my feet wet. Already been a few sessions you've thrown that I really wanted to check out and seemed really interesting/helpful, but Seahawks tickets and funds going towards my sister's wedding are interfering! So hopefully I can join in sooner than later. Thanks man!

REDred Photo School & Studio offers aspiring Seattle photographers a unique opportunity to interact with other talented photographers in the community and learn new skills and techniques. We offer a variety of workshops and lighting labs as well as FREE critique sessions, movie nights, and group exhibitions. Studio rental, private lessons, and assistantships are also available.

About the Organizer:

My career as a photographer began as little more than a rewarding hobby carried over from childhood. My dad taught me to use an old Canon when I was 10 years old and I've been hooked ever since. Later, I was working in the corporate sector as a graphic designer and branding consultant, making plenty of money, feeling unfulfilled, and seeking solace in weekend photography gigs and photo clubs. Soon, I was looking for ways to ditch work for photo gigs without getting caught. It took a couple of family tragedies to wake me up and decide it was time for a change... and with that, I quit my job, packed up my life and moved across the country to Seattle for a fresh start. My goal was to start a new life entirely devoted to photography and creative collaboration.

Along the way I discovered two things... 1. Building a new business is probably the hardest thing I will ever do with my life. I often work 20 hours a day, building and maintaining personal relationships has become a challenge, and there is little time for personal creative growth. Occasionally, I ask myself if job fulfillment is really worth all the strife... that is until I'm reminded of the second major discovery I've made on this journey... 2. Teaching is the most rewarding and fulfilling vocation I have ever engaged in. This is what lights my fire and carries me through the 20-hour days and the fear of going broke. I have found such joy and happiness in teaching, and facilitating a community of photographers, that I can no longer imagine doing anything else with my life.

I've always thought of myself as an artist working in various mediums such as graphic design, music, photography, and others. Of course, I still love creating things and will continue to do so. Now I've discovered a new love for developing a community and a learning environment, collaborating with other creative minds, and challenging others to explore their creative depths through workshops and meetups.
