Beginners' indoor climbing course

Securing your partner (belaying) is an essential part of climbing - and important to get right (your partner's safety depends on it). Most climbing centres therefore offer courses by qualified instructors - and require you to take this (or prove that you know the technique) before you can climb.

I'm therefore arranging a course in English at the Bensheim kletterhalle for those who, like me, are interested in taking up climbing (a good hobby for the winter months*...).

Course dates: Thursday 28th Feb & Thurs 7th March - please check that you can attend both before RSVPing. As well as covering how to belay, the course in Bensheim teaches basic climbing technique.

The cost for the course is 65 euros and involves two three-hour classes in Bensheim. Instruction, hall entry and loan of all the equipment (climbing belt, climbings shoes, carabiners etc) is included. Payment for the course will be made in advance to the climbing hall at the start of next week. Payment is therefore by paypal in advance. For students under 30, there is a discounted rate of 45 euros.

Getting there:

For those arriving by train I'll arrange a shuttle from the station to the climbing hall (the climbing hall is only 5 minutes drive from the station, but not straightforward to reach with public transport).

From Heidelberg by train: take the train from the Hauptbahnhof at 18:21 there, and one at 22:55 for the return (arriving back in Heidelberg at 23:35).

From Mannheim, there's a direct train at 18:20, and on the way back you'd get the train towards Heidelberg and change at Friedrichsfeld, arriving in Mannheim at 23:43.

    Hi Rachel,
You mentioned that there could be a discount for students under 30. Is this only for students or for anyone attending the course? Could you please check this for me? Thanks!

Hi Rachel, Thank you for arranging this! :) Are track pants/yoga pants ok or jeans are better? Also, what about the right shoes? Would they be provided by the Kletterhalle?

Shoes are provided as part of the equipment. For clothing- sports clothes that let you move but aren't overly baggy are best. When I tried it out I wore a pair of hiking trousers and a t-shirt there were lots of people in track pants and one or two in jeans (though I think jeans might restrict movement too much to be comfortable)
