As Saturday is going to be very warm, we'll start a little later than planned (7.25pm at Neckargemünd Bahnhof). From here we'll walk through the old town and a little stretch along the river - before heading into the cool forest. We'll then continue a little uphill then along the edge of the valley for about 2 km, before heading down to the meadow opposite Neckarsteinach, from where we'll have a great view of the fireworks. About 4km (1 hour) hiking, with 100 m ascent.
We'll then find a spot at the meadow for our picnic (from about 8.45 pm) , watch the sunset and wait for the castle illuminations and fireworks (at about 22:15).
What to bring:
Most importantly water (although we'll be hiking mostly in the cool forest, after a high of 37 degrees it will still be warm).
Sunscreen, if (like me!) you burn even in the weaker evening sun.
Something to eat at the picnic, and soft-drinks / beer / wine (as you wish)
If possible, a torch (flash-light) as there is about a 15 minute walk back from the meadow to the station - good paths but some of it is unlight.
A comfortable back-pack to carry the food / drink in.
Trainers or walking shoes - please no flipflops nor sandals (unless specifically designed for hiking).
A picnic blanket, if you have one
If you wish a frisbee, football etc for entertainment until the sun goes down
Those travelling by train can meet at Heidelberg main train station - outside the tourist information office - at 18:35, and leave on a bus to Neckargemünd at 18:46 (the bus is a rail replacement bus, due to engineering work that weekend). For those travelling by car, meet us outside the railway station at 19:25 - there is some parking at the station.
There are return trains from Neckarsteinach to Neckargemünd at 23:19 or 23:49 . Both go to Neckargemünd where drivers can pick up their cars and those going by public transport change to the rail replacement bus to Heidelberg (arriving at midnight or 00:30, depending if you get the earlier or later train).
