Winter Trip to Grindelwald

To stay active also in winter, we should go to Switzerland where the mountains are higher than here.
The hostel is reserved. It is in the valley, from where we can do different activities (as you prefer):
Hiking on prepared winter trails
Downhill by sledge
Skiing
Visiting the city of Interlaken
Swimming, Sauna.

(refer to www.grindelwald.ch)

Ski buses take us up into the mountains.

The guest card includes gratis the ski bus and indoor swimming pool!

We will sleep in 6-bed or 4-bed bedrooms in the "Mountain Hostel" in Grindelwald:
http://www.eiger-grindelwald.ch/en/mountain-hostel
We can get breakfast there and dinner in a hotel connected to the hostel.

INFO ON SKIING:

Best option Skipass: First/Kleine Scheidegg/Maennlichen: large area, directly accesible from Grindelwald; see map below; red area; Grindelwald is at bottom, 1/3 from left.

Best option rental: Intersport, because they have multiple locations, both at the bottom and halfway up the mountain, so easy and no hassle in case you need to swap gear; no significant price difference with other options.

The trip by car takes 5 hours via Basel / Bern / Interlaken.
We should start on Friday morning. Maybe we could organise a car going later on Friday.

Costs:

(1 CHF = 0,83 Euro,[masked])

Trip by car: 50 Euro (approx.)

Swiss motorway vignette: 33 Euro per car

Bed for 2 nights: 70 Euro (84 CHF) including breakfast (+ 5,80 Euro per night if you need a sleeping bag).

2 dinners in hotel (facultative): 45 Euro (54 CHF)

Sauna: 17 Euro (20 CHF)

The accommodation must be booked for at least two nights.

We get a special price for the dinner. I would recommend to take it!

All the cable cabins, trains, etc. are VERY expensive!

For skiing, you need a ski pass.

For hiking and sledging there are two options:

Or pay 75 Euro for 2 days or pay the sledge pists separately (the hiking trails are free).

You should pay the sum of 70 Euro (plus 2.40 paypay fee) for the accommodation until 13 January 2013.

It is possible to cancel your reservation until 21 January 2013 without loosing money.

Afterwards: 50% refunding until 1 week before; no refunding on the last 7 days before 22 February.

Payment can be made through meetup via paypal when you RSVP (after 13th Jan this will be mandatory) - or in person to Rachel (before 13th of January only).  Please note the strict cancellation policy above (imposed by the hostel) and only go through with the RSVP if you are sure you can attend.

Questions about payments should go to Rachel.

    Hi guys,

Unless there is a forecast for severe snow storms, I plan to go by car. Probably handly to have at least one car there anyway.

My car is 4WD and has all weather tires.

I can certainly take 3 passengers (including Devyani, who already asked), even 4 if we do not take along lots of luggage.

    Let me know if interested.

Martin, everything looks organized-) . is there something like a draft itenar? I dont really need one, but was asking if you have it in your mind. about the hikes. Will we do the two organized hikes ith the whole group that you mentioned in the PDF? I don't ski, so I am just coming for hikes

    January 12, 2013

    • MartinC

I will go hiking and take the sledge with me to go back downhill by sledge. I think there will be some more people for hiking. I recommend the hike on the Faulhorn mountain via the lake. We can only organise the daily programme there.

    Hello Martin,
Do you think that we can get a special offer for a group train ticket?

    January 9, 2013

    • MartinC

On bahn.de under "Offers", you will find tickets called "Gruppe&Spar" for groups of 6 people or more. But you should organise this by yourself. http://www.bahn.de/i/...

      January 10, 2013

    • MartinC

Quite expensive: for 6 people 115 Euro per person for a return ticket

For all those who would like to participate:
    There is a waiting list.
Another possibility would be to book the train/hostel by yourself.
Train: 8:14 from Heidelberg Hbf, back at 17:19. You must take the booked trains in Germany (in Switzerland you can take any train between Basel and Grindelwald).

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
