New Meetup: Watkins Glen Gorge Hike

From: Kristin
Sent on: Friday, September 24, 2010 3:49 PM
Announcing a new Meetup for The Rochester Hiking Meetup Group!

What: Watkins Glen Gorge Hike

When: Sunday, October 10,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Bushnell's Basin Park & Ride
Route 96 Bushnell's Basin
Perinton, NY 14450

~4 Miles

This will be a very picturesque hike alongside and within Watkins Glen State Park's narrow and rugged gorge. The park is located at the southern end of Seneca Lake. It features an impressive entrance tunnel which was hand-cut into the park's sedimentary rock layers in the early 1900s, a walk-behind waterfall, and a suspension bridge.

We will first walk on the northern rim of Glen Creek dropping down to beside the creek and then rising to survey the park's stunning natural beauty from above. After a break for lunch, we will return to the hewn-rock pathways and stairways of the Gorge Trail for close-up views of the waterfalls and deep pools that the creek has sculpted. We will conclude the hike by following a wooded pathway that will take us slightly away from the gorge to the southern edge of the park before returning us to the parking lot.

Noteworthy, so please note! The trip to Watkins Glen State Park is 3 hours round trip, so be prepared to spend most of your day on this excursion. Since this is such a long way from Rochester, we will plan to stop for a 20-minute lunch break during the hike, so carry food and water.
This is a strenuous hike which has trails that ascend and descend the gorge all along the way. Many of these climbs are accomplished using staircases. The park literature says there are[masked] stairs. (I did not count when I was scouting. I was too tired!) Please be prepared for a vigorous experience.
Lastly, the Gorge Trail (including staircases) is made of stone. It is wet and will be slippery - especially if leaves have fallen onto the surface. Appropriate footwear for these conditions is a must.

Meet on-time for a 9 a.m. departure from the park and ride. There will be a $7 carpool fee for non-drivers. This includes money for the park entrance fee which is $8 per car. Our excursion will include a very short car shuttle once we arrive at the park.

Call Kristin at[masked] with questions.
