Important Florida Action Update!!!!

Dear Members-
This is good news! This from Act For America:
******** *** IMPORTANT FLORIDA ACTION UPDATE! ***

ALAC LEGISLATION SAILS THROUGH FLORIDA HOUSE
JUDICIARY COMMITTEE BY A VOTE OF 13-1!!!

by Lisa Piraneo, Director of Government Relations & Kelly Cook, National Field Director
“The proof is in the pudding,” as they say. As a result of the outstanding effort that our Floridian grassroots have put into the effort, Florida’s American Laws for American Courts (ALAC) legislation is moving successfully through the state legislature.

We can’t thank you enough. Things have been progressing rather quickly on the ALAC issue in Florida and we wanted to provide you with some updates as well as additional requests for action.

First, as is noted in an article from Sunshine State News posted yesterday, with only ONE dissenting vote, the ALAC legislation in the House, HB1209, passed in the Florida House Judiciary Committee. The final vote was 13-1. This is terrific news!

Because of the successes of ALAC legislation across the nation, opponents are out in full force. We have been informed that next week, these opponents will be making a physical presence at the State Capitol in Tallahassee. We expected this strategy as it’s their usual modus operandi. We need to avoid being pulled into their trap and stay the course.

ALEC legislation has been moving at lightning speed in state legislatures across the country because on its merits alone these bills are important and necessary. We are seeing a growing number of legislators understand that fact. By courteously and professionally addressing this issue with their state legislators our grassroots have been moving the ball down the field.

We need to stay the course and continue to express support for ALAC legislation in Florida in a respectful and methodical way. By doing so, we will be victorious.

As we said, there is still much to be done to see this important legislation passed into law and we need your continued assistance.

Today we ask you to help out in two different, but very important ways to make sure this bill sees the light of day and is passed into law:

ACTION ITEM 1:

Please send an e-mail or make a phone call to your Representative in the Florida House of Representatives and urge him/her to vote “YES” when HB1209 comes to the full House for a vote. You can use a modified version of the suggested text noted below.

ACTION ITEM 2:

A hearing on the Florida state Senate’s ALAC bill, SB1360, has been scheduled for next Tuesday, February 28th in the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Criminal and Civil Justice Appropriations (10:45 a.m. in room 37 of the Senate Office Building). We need to make sure that every member of the Subcommittee is contacted and asked to support the Senate bill, SB1360.

Please take a moment as soon as possible to send an e-mail to members of the Subcommittee (see list below) to express your strong support for SB1360.

A sample script is as follows:

Dear Senator,

SB1360, legislation introduced by Senator Alan Hays, would protect the constitutional rights of Floridians from the incursion of foreign laws and foreign legal doctrines.

This bill is scheduled to be discussed in the Budget Subcommittee on Criminal and Civil Justice Appropriations on Tuesday, February 28th. I ask that you vote in favor of SB1360 when it comes before you in the Subcommittee.

Further, I ask that you allow this legislation to be voted on by the full Florida Senate as soon as possible.

We must maintain the authority of the Florida and U.S. Constitutions.

This bill is of the utmost importance to me!

Thank you for your leadership on this vital matter.

Sincerely,

(Your name and city)
