Kumara Parvatha, a Trekkers Paradise - The toughest trek in Karnataka

  • No location was chosen

  •

Are you ready for this Challenge ?

This is not for the following people:

    1. Not for first timers.

    2. Not for families or children below 18 years.

    3. If your cannot carry your own luggage, its not for you.

    4. If you cant carry around 10+kg luggage, its not for you.

    5. Smokers are discouraged as you will be climbing most of the time.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Kumara Parvata Peak more popularly known as  ‘Pushpagiri’ lies in the backdrop of ancient shrine of Kukke Subramanya.

Kumara Parvata, the third tallest peak in Karnataka, nestled within the high clouds, is one of the most beautiful scenarios of the Western Ghats.

The place is almost always covered with dense fogs and heavy winds. It is rampant with leeches and snakes, and is also known as the land of the King Cobra. Hence the best time to avoid them would be the dry months of April and May when the rains are yet to be received.

I have read that we should avoid this trek in Summer time. So lets go with a common consensus.

Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, from Subramanya in Mangalore District to Somwarpet in Coorg district covers an area of 102 sq km. This range is also abode to many gigantic peaks in the Western Ghats.

Kumara Parvata Peak stands the tallest amongst the peaks in Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary at an altitude of 5136 ft (1712 mts) above Sea level.

Distance from Bangalore 230 kms (one way)

Total trekking distance 14-15 kms approx. (one way)

I will add more and finer details of this trek as we move on.

Only people with a tough spirit pls RSVP. All the best !

Around Nov 1 (every year) would be the best time to go KP. Immediately after rains, the entire stretch would be lush green and one can enjoy it. It is important one enjoys this trek. Otherwise it would be a strugle.

There are couple more attractions - simhasana betta (on the extreme cliff of Bhatru Mane) and a water falls near Basavanakallu. Not many are aware of this.

Hello Ketan, this is postponed and I am planning on a trek from Kodanad to Thengumarada on the same dates. Pls check the meetup announcement for that and let me know if it interests you. :)

      April 8, 2013

  • Raj

Guys... In case we might have to postpone this trek to after monsoon, may i suggest another trek from Kodanad View Point to Thenguramada. It will be a 5 to 6 hour trek and downhill al the way... calls for a lot of endurance. I have done it quite a few times. We will be climbing dwon from around 2000 mts MSL to around 350 mts MSL and camping at the trekking shed there. I have a retired Forest Range officer who is willing to join us... in fact he was the Range Officer there for a few years and he can guide us a lot... he is very knowledgeable and this will not only be a trek but also sort of an educational trip for us as he can detail us on the names and sub species of various flora and fauna :)

Let me know how many of you are interested... if need be, we can event post it as a separate event...:)

    1 · March 28, 2013

    • Kaushik G.

Raj, in case we plan to go for the Kodanad to Thenguramada trek, please keep me posted about the same. I have done KP few times from all the possible routes, hence not very keen on it. I have a 2 member tent and backpacking stove and utensils that I can get, if needed. Here's my no, just in case :-) -[masked]

      April 2, 2013

    • Raj

Kaushik, I have posted the trek from Kodanad to Thengumarada. Pls check when you have the time. :)

      April 8, 2013

  • Rinka S.

    I'm dropping out as there's a good chance I'll get sun-stroke.

But If you plan to do this in cloudy/cooler weather, I'm game for the longer route.

Sorry, but I really would have liked to come along.

    1 · April 2, 2013

Thanks!! - you do that and I'll sign up in a flash. Will get my kids too. Both are experienced trekkers.

  • Swaminathan S.

So my friend and I did this last weekend from Kukke Subramanya. The trek was awesome, but its getting hotter, hence more difficult. Do reach out if you need any info. PS: As Raj mentioned, this isn't an easy trek, of the 20-30 people who started from Kukke side the morning we left, only 2 others (other than us) made it to the top. I hear that Somwarpet side is much easier though.

    March 19, 2013

    • Raj

I am not aware how many have experience with leeches... it will be bad. Calls for rapid movement and almost zero rest on leech territory... not advisable. My team got stuck once on our way back from deep inside the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve on our way back from a medical camp and the whole team was covered from head to toe with leeches for a few hours... the leeches even managed to enter the jeep and crawl onto the roof and almost everywhere... it was like a Spielberg movie for us :)

      March 28, 2013

    • Rinka S.

I've encountered Leeches in Wayanad - we got tobacco leaves and that helped. Anyway, we ended up with a lot of blood soaked clothing.

  • Alok B.

Hi, I won't be around in April, but would love to do this trek this weekend or the following weekend...if anyone would like to do it earlier, please message me...any tips also on getting there, etc. are much appreciated. Alok

    March 11, 2013

  • Rinka S.

Maybe. The heat is something that will be tough to take.

    March 9, 2013

    • Raj

Yep... thats what might be an issue... we will cross the bridge when we get to it :)

      March 10, 2013

  • Rinka S.

    Raj
I'm interested. My daughter might enjoy this too - She's almost 18 though

    March 9, 2013

    • Rinka S.

Also, I assume the route is from Kukke Subramanya and not via Somwarpet. Is that right?

      March 9, 2013

    • Raj

Again, that is left to a common consensus. In case of too much of heat then the shortest route :)

    March 9, 2013
