Outdoor climbing at Elizabeth Furnace

I recently learned that the only outdoor sport climbing in Virginia is at the Buzzard Rocks area of Elizabeth Furnace, so we want to go check it out. The plan is to top-rope them and maybe do some (mock?) sport leads. The info page linked above says it's about a 45-minute hike in, and I don't think any of us have been there before, it could take us a while to figure out the routes and set up the belays. To attend, you must have climbed with the group at least 3 times in the past 6 months (we can check your attendance history through Meetup) and if you are interested but just aren't one of the regular gym climbers please email one of the organizers to describe your situation. Basically, you must know how to belay, and you must have your own shoes, harness, and helmet. If you have other gear, list it in your RSVP comment and we'll let you know if you should bring it. If you haven't climbed outdoors before, that's OK, but you should at least be an experienced and competent gym climber. Most of the routes are 5.8s and if you don't have any outdoor experience it will seem much harder than a 5.8 gym climb (there's no tape on the cliffs to mark the holds). You should also bring PLENTY of water. I will be bringing 3 or 4 liters to the cliffs and will leave another bottle in the car. We're going to meet at the Vienna metro station and carpool from there. If you are willing to drive, mention how many passengers you can take in your RSVP comment. If there's interest, we can get dinner at Jalisco in Front Royal afterward. Note: Rock climbing equipment (especially the ropes) doesn't last forever. All of the equipment you'll be climbing on is personally owned and paid for by the Event Organizer or other members that bring their personal gear. The $10 fee is for equipment wear-and-tear, not for instructional or guide services to be provided by any of the organizers or members. The fees will go into an account that will first pay the annual Meetup dues and then be used to purchase new group-owned equipment for future outdoor events. However, tips are accepted :-)

Aside from taking the brush-whacking approach to the rocks, it was an awesome day with a great group of people! Led my first outdoor sport climb too. =D

Thanks Katie, I'm in Cleveland Park, which is probably too far out of your way. I'm planning to bring most if not all of the rack since it seems like it will come in handy.

David, where do you live at? I'm in Shirlington (Arlington/Alexandria border). Also, if you don't mind bringing some trad pieces, we may need them if we do any of the sport climbs (apparently they're more secure/less runout with a few pieces of trad protection).

If anyone's driving from Northwest DC, I'd love a ride.

There is also Soul Mountain in Front Royal which has good eats., but I'll have to look into the vegetarian options they offer...

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
