Outdoor Climbing @ Great Falls

*IF* the weather cooperates, we're going to climb at Great Falls National Park in Virginia. Weather forecasts seem to always be wrong, so just call me Sunday morning to confirm if the trip is a go. If it looks like it's going to rain in the morning but be clear in the afternoon, we'll see about delaying. I'm not sure what it'll be like climbing on slippery rocks, though. If it doesn't rain and everyone is having fun, we could be out till nightfall. Meet in front of the McDonalds on North Moore St. across from the Rosslyn metro station at 9:15am or at the climber's sign-in board at the end of the first parking lot in the park at 10am. To get to this parking lot, you need to make a hairpin turn to the right about FIVE FEET past the entrance booth. If you miss it (or it's full), there's a second parking lot you can park in, but then you'll have to walk back to the first parking lot and the climber's sign-in board. NOTE: There isn't an actual street address for the park and the address listed here is just approximate. Get directions from here, or use GPS coordinates. (If you end up in Maryland because you blindly followed your GPS or Google Maps, I will laugh at you when you call me for directions.) GPS coordinates for the park entrance:[masked], -77.255. GPS coordinates for the climber's sign-in board:[masked], -77.253910. Or take a look at the attached image. The red line goes from Old Dominion road, through the gate, to the parking lot, to the climber's sign-in board. Please specify in your RSVP where you plan to meet so we know who to look for where. Since the weather is iffy and there's a park admission fee, we're not going to charge for this event. The Climbing Great Falls has dozens if not hundreds of climbs. We'll figure out what to set up once everyone gets there. Equipment & Experience Required for everyone: - Harness - Shoes - Helmet - 2+ liters of water (Great Falls is *HOT*) - Lunch Experience: - You must know how to climb & top-rope belay (i.e. gym climbing) - Outdoor climbing experience not required. This is a great "first time outdoors" trip. Bring it if you've got it: - Sunscreen & bug repellent - Climbing rope - Top-rope anchor setup (static lines, locking biners, etc)

I had several people suggest to me that we start outdoor climbs earlier in the day, or have two different start times if that's more convenient (say 8 am and 10 am). I would be happy to organize at the earlier time slot. That way we'd also have some climbs set up for those who arrive later, and could spend more time climbing. :-)

Yeah, we got soaked, but it was so hot it felt good! Thanks everyone for not complaining about how long it took us to figure out where to set up the ropes.

I will come directly to the parking lot. Driving from MD (just by the American Legions Bridge) -- if anyone wants to join me... I will be there at or right after 10AM.
