Shaffer Rock is in Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania. This is only about a 1.5hr drive from the Shady Grove metro station (without traffic, of course). The cabin is booked, but I will be calling tomorrow to find out about the availability of car camping within the park. Another option is the Granite Hill Camping Resort, but that will cost $21/person for 2 nights and we may not be able to adjoining campsites. This trip is not for inexperienced climbers. You do not have to have outdoor climbing experience, but you must at least be a competent gym climber and know how to belay. You *MUST* have your own climbing harness, climbing shoes, and helmet (a bike or ski/snowboarding helmet is sufficient). I reserved a primitive campsite in Michaux State Forest that's only about a 30-minute drive from the climbing for Saturday night. The site has no water or toilets, so we'll have to bring in all of our water, dig cat holes for solid human waste, and pack out all of our trash. On the plus site, the campsite is gated and we can set up tents right next to the vehicles.
