Outdoor climbing at Carderock

UPDATE (11:05am Friday): The weather is still pretty iffy, with a 30% chance of rain. After having to cancel last weekend, I want to wait until tomorrow morning to make a final decision. If the skies are clear at 7am tomorrow, I'm going to go for it. If it starts raining while we're out there, it's not a big deal. I've eliminated the charge for this event and I'll refund everyone who already paid.

-----

This event is suitable for people who have never climbed outdoors before, but you should at least know how to belay. You'll also need your own climbing gear (shoes, harness, helmet). Be warned: You'll be doing a lot more standing around than you would at the gym because it takes us a while to set up the ropes. I'm keeping the group size small because I can only set up two ropes with the gear I have. If you're experienced at setting up top-rope systems outdoors and/or have gear (especially ropes), please mention that in a comment and I'll increase the group size.

I will send out an email to everyone signed up with my cell phone # and any last-minute updates. I won't cancel if it's cold, but I will cancel if it's raining. If you're in doubt, you can always call me.

Why I'm charging: When we've done outdoor events for free in the past, there are always people who RSVP and then cancel at the last minute or just don't show up. That means others who really wanted to attend are not able to. As an attempt to discourage this behavior, I charge $11 to attend (which you must pay to RSVP) and then give everyone who shows up $10 cash back. If you don't show up, we keep the money. The money goes towards the $50 annual fee that Meetup charges group organizers and the ropes & gear we use for the outdoor events.

Carpooling: Although there's no fee to enter the park and usually plenty of parking, I encourage people to carpool. Save the environment, save gas, and maybe make a new friend. Carderock is only about 20 minutes from the Rosslyn, Bethesda, or Tenleytown metro stations. If you're willing to take people, indicate how many spots you've got in your car and which Metro station you can pick people up at.

What to bring: harness (required), helmet (required, but a bike or ski helmet is fine), climbing shoes (optional), hiking shoes/boots (I don't want people walking around barefoot or in flip-flops), food & water, clothing appropriate for weather, any additional climbing gear you've got (ropes, slings, carabiners, belay devices, etc.).

Where to Meet: We'll meet in the climber's parking lot at 9am. I'll have a big red & white Meetup sign w/ me. We'll wait there a few minutes and then we'll head to the crags. If you arrive late, call me or just walk over to the crags and ask people until you find us. (I'm not bringing the big Meetup sign to the crags).

Directions

WARNING: If you just punch "Carderock" in your GPS/smartphone, it will *NOT* send you to the correct place. Either use the GPS coordinates [masked], [masked] or follow the directions below.

Driving directions from points north:

I-495 (Washington Beltway) West toward N. Virginia
Take Exit 41 (Carderock)
Take first exit (approximately 1 mile)
Turn left at top of ramp
Follow winding road to Stop sign, turn right
Follow road until it ends in the climber's parking lot

Driving directions from points south:

I-495 (Washington Beltway) North toward Rockville, Md.
Cross Potomac River on the American Legion Bridge (stay in right lane in order to exit at end of bridge)
Take Exit 41 (Carderock, Clara Barton Pkwy.)
Bear left at fork in ramp onto Clara Barton Pkwy.
Take first exit (approximately 1 mile)
Turn left at top of ramp
Follow winding road to Stop sign, turn right

Walking Directions from Climber's Parking Lot to Crags: Take the obvious path that runs from the parking lot past the bathhouse. When you see the informational sign, follow the path to the right, which leads down and around the crags. When you get to the river, follow the path to the left, back in the direction you came from. Total travel time from parking lot to crags is less than 10 minutes.
