New Meetup: Sportrock Alexandria 10/20

From: Caitlin
Sent on: Sunday, October 19, 2008 10:13 PM
Announcing a new Meetup for The VA/MD/DC Rock Climber's Meetup Group!

What: Sportrock Alexandria 10/20

When: October 20,[masked]:30 PM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Meetup Description: The Essentials
If you're late, look for me (girl with chin-length brown hair) - I will have some kind of brightly colored bandanna tied to my harness or belt loops. If you don't see me, tell the staff you're there for the meetup group and you're looking for me (Caitlin).

Normal day pass: $18
**If you tell the staff you are with the meetup group, they will give you the member's guest discounted price of $14**
Climbing shoes and harness rental: $6.50
Feel free to bring your own gear if you have it.

The gym is a short walk from the Van Dorn metro station and there's usually plenty of parking (though you may have to park at the back of the building). Check http://www.sportrock.com for more details.

If you have not been to the gym before, you will need to sign a waiver.
No matter how long you have been climbing, you will still need to pass Sport Rock's belay test to be allowed to tie your own knot and belay other people. As a belayer, you are holding someone else's life in your hands - Sport Rock has the right and responsibility to make sure that everyone in their gym will be safe while participating in this sport.

If you don't know how to belay and/or tie in, you can plan on taking Sport Rock's Basic Skills course and then take their test. The course lasts one hour and costs $25 - you don't need to do it the first few times you climb, but if you decide you'd like to be a regular it's definitely something you'll want to do.

Other Info
If you've never climbed before, I'll show you some tips on how to get started in climbing. We have a very friendly group of people, so don't worry if you struggle at first! Everyone's been there at some point.

Wear clothes that are easy to move in. Avoid short shorts, because they tend to be uncomfortable with the harness. It can get pretty warm in the gym, so you may want to wear layers. A water bottle is always a great thing to have with you!

If you have any questions at all, just send me a message and I'll be happy to help!
