Climb stuff in Mazama

  • Sep 14, 2013 · 9:00 AM

The overall plan: Saturday morning we'll be heading to the Upper Methow Valley (which is a drive of about 3 hours 20 mins) to explore Mazama.
http://goo.gl/maps/2nW0F
Here is a guide to the climbing areas in this region
http://www.goatsbeardmountainsupplies.com/climbingbeta.html
Top rope or lead. Beginners, intermediate, advanced, all are welcome whether you've been outdoors before or not.

Saturday
First stop, Fun Rocks, about 1.3 miles before Mazama itself. There's a parking lot on the left side of Lost River Road as you head towards town and we'll meet there at 9am. This link...
http://www.goatsbeardmountainsupplies.com/mazamafunrocks.html
Takes you to a printable and pretty extensive summary of all that this area has to offer.

Saturday Night
Ballard campground comes well recommended and will be the first one we try to acquire a spot at ($8/night, +$5 per additional vehicle - 2 cars/site max)

http://goo.gl/maps/Bi6mI
And if that happens to be full, there's a bunch of others in the area to try
http://goo.gl/maps/8mnxu

Sunday:
Off to Prospector Wall, 8.3 miles from Mazama.
http://www.goatsbeardmountainsupplies.com/prospector.html

Communications
I'll email all the rsvp-ers nearer the date and we can trade
numbers to ensure late arrivals or lostee's (it happens) can locate us or catch up or get directions (if I don't reply immediately give it a little while, I might be climbing, belaying someone, out of breath from hiking, or have no reception at all).
Basically when you see the champagne colored Toyota Corola with
the 'LA County Coroner' sticker you're in the right place. At the crags look for the 'Union Jack' painted climbing helmet.

Some of us will most likely head up Friday to get all the driving out of the way. Feel free to join us, and let us know if you are planning to do this so we can tell you if the campground is full and we're at a different one.

Stuff to Bring
Essentials: Harness, shoes, water, sunblock. Helmets are recommended.
Would be handy if you have them: Rope, quickdrawers, ATC/grigri, personal anchor, cams, chalk, anchors, slings and such.
Camping: Tent, food, firewood, sleeping bag.

Spectacular views driving in, brilliant climbing, superb camping with equally grand people, plus jumping into a nice cool river afterwards. Thanks to all for coming, we'll definitely have to revisit this place.

Will the campgrounds around Mazama allow for fires this weekend? I'm wondering how much wood I should bring.

    September 12, 2013

    • Candace W.

Can I ask where you found that information?

      September 12, 2013

I asked my friend Google "mazama WA campgrounds"

I can't make it after all as I can't get away Friday pm due to work-related obligations on Friday evening. Looks like the same for the following weekend. Anyone interested in a day-trip mid-week next week? Or even a visit to Seattle climbing wall one evening? Should get easier to get away once I'm settled here. Thanks, everyone, for the advice and offers of a ride. Have a great weekend - I'm very jealous!

If you like to climb next weekend or mid-week after work, I'm all for it. Shoot me an email if you are interested.

    NORTH CASCADE HWY SR20rss
    Elevation: 5477 ft / 1669 m
    Temperature: Not Available
    Conditions:
SR20 North Cascade Highway is open to all traffic. There will be trucks working on the shoulders in some areas.

See you there! We'll be at Ballard in the afternoon and trying to run to whichever crag is closest for a few quick climbs. I have verizon so I'll have my phone.

I might stay local this weekend and try climbing on Sunday. If anyone is around lemme know. See you at the next one. Left heal hook on the 10b at FunRocks!

Kaeli and Brian, we have 1 more spot in our car. We're leaving at 5pm on Friday from South Lake Union/Whole Foods. If that suits either of you, whoever replies scores the last spot. I think there are some others that can also give rides if you look through the comments and posts on here :)

    September 12, 2013

    • Brian D

I can do that.. I'll send ya a message for contact info. Thanks!

Can we get an idea of how many folks are bringing rope and gear? Txs

Hey, just joined as well. Anyone driving from/through capitol hill or redmond area on Friday that has room for one more? Will pitch in for gas :)

    September 11, 2013

Leaving beacon hill Friday night, back Sunday afternoon. Got room for a few more if anyone's looking for a ride.

    September 9, 2013

    • Mike

Yeah absolutely. I was thinking around leaving beacon hill around 6pm. Let me know.

I actually gonna be hard for me to leave on friday, so I'll have to pass on this one. Thanks anyways though.

Is there a grocery store near where we're camping or do you advise that we bring our food for the weekend? Can't wait!

    September 11, 2013

  • Maryanna B.

Can I grab a ride with someone? I'd shower you with beer, gratitude, cash for gas, and cookies.

      Friday at 1PM?

      September 10, 2013

I'll try to make it work.

      September 10, 2013

I'll be taking off Friday morning(noon latest?). I'd prefer to have everyone camp in the same area, so if we get some idea of how many tents/cars there will be I can try to organize us together. I have verizon so it sounds like I'll be able to update the meetup when I arrive to let you know which campsite we've chosen if Ballard is full.

    September 8, 2013

    • Bruce M.

But it looks like they'll have it cleared by Thursday (fingers crossed)

      September 9, 2013

    • Mike S.

Pending the pass being cleared. ill be there Saturday afternoon.

Hi, I just arrived in Seattle on Friday, from England. I'm keen to go on this trip but I have no car yet. Any chance of a lift? Oops, I mean ride - I'm still learning the language. I will happily pay for petrol (gas?) etc.

I will try to borrow a tent as my stuff hasn't arrived yet but I do have rock shoes, harness and atc with me, as well as a sleeping bag and bivouac bag. If I can't get a tent, is it OK to bivouac at this site? Excuse the naive question - I've bivouacked a lot but this is my first time in the great American outdoors and I don't know your critters, laws or customs. Will I be eaten by bears or cougars, arrested by rangers or just regarded as eccentric? I can deal with the last of these.

Also, are people planning to leave Seattle on Friday evening or early Saturday morning? Sorry for all the questions, and many thanks!

    Ed

    September 8, 2013

    • Mike S.

No discovery pass required, but good point Will. Always have it with you.

      September 9, 2013

    • Zeke

We do have bears and cougars, but a tent won't do much for that. The only real trouble you'll get from bivying is from mosquitos and dew.

Has anyone been to this area before? Will we be car camping or will we need to hike into camp? Also, are the approaches to the climbing areas very long? I'm trying to work out whether I'll be able to lug a heavy tent around, amongst other things :)

    September 4, 2013

    • Bruce M.

We'll be car camping, and the approaches for Fun Rock are very short.

      September 4, 2013

    • Candace W.

Yay! In that case, I can bring marshmallows and some wood.

Just to let you know, there's no 3G/4G in the Mazama area and phone service only at the convenience shop (with really good coffee). There's plenty of free camping too if you find the paid campsites full or too far.

    August 19, 2013

    • Cristina B.

I had phone service and 3G when I was there a month or so ago. Verizon.

      August 19, 2013

    • Mike S.

AT&T has no service until about 5 miles east of Mazama on hwy 20. But the climbing area is super easy to find.

      August 20, 2013

  • Will

Definitely going unless weather throws us a curveball. My brother will be in town that weekend for his second outdoor climb ever!
