Climb stuff in Leavenworth for Oktoberfest

  • October 5, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • Icicle Creek Canyon

It's Oktoberfest! So we're heading up to take advantage of the camping, the festivities, and the rock. Come join for whatever bit, or combo thereof you fancy.
(air quality: https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/enviwa/)

Saturday
We'll meet at Clamshell Cave 10am where there are lots of routes ranging from 5.6 to 10c.

Every route can be easily accessed from above to set up top ropes or you can lead them. There's also some excellent low 5.7 and 5.8 cracks and flakes that are supplemented by bolts to let you play with cams and nuts should you want to add a trad climb to your season.

Here is a map that also has images of the rock formation to stop and park opposite (no pass or fees required) and how to find the trail that leads up to it (once you find the start it's a very obvious trail straight to it).

Saturday Evening

There's the option of heading into town and then camping or just heading up to camp for drinks and food of our own devising. The secret free camping area is thoroughly recommended.

Find Mountain Home Road opposite the Safeway and just keep going until you come to the mini-railroad tracks.
Here's the exact location...
http://goo.gl/maps/7ai5e

Sunday
In the evening we'll put it up to a vote where we fancy going and what we want to do. We'll update the meetup with the consensus.

Communications
I'll email all the rsvp-ers nearer the date and we can trade
numbers to ensure late arrivals or lostee's (it happens) can locate us or catch up or get directions (if I don't reply immediately give it a little while, I might be climbing, belaying someone, out of breath from hiking, or have no reception at all).
Basically when you see the champagne colored Toyota Corola with
the 'LA County Coroner' sticker you're in the right place. At the crags look for the 'Union Jack' painted climbing helmet.

Stuff to Bring
Essentials: Harness, shoes, water, sunblock. Helmets are recommended.
Would be handy if you have them: Rope, quickdrawers, ATC/grigri, personal anchor, cams, chalk, anchors, slings and such.
Camping: Tent, food, firewood, sleeping bag.

Hoffe dich bald zu sehen!

Hi Michael, were there spots available on Saturday night at 8 mile? People asking me about places in official campgrounds in Icicle Creek during Oktoberfest, but did not I stayed there so I'm asking you. Thanks.

Brilliant weekend. Perfect weather - barely a cloud in the sky. Lots of splendid climbs including my first trad lead and first crack climb, plus a first visit to Alphabet Rock where I acquired a new nemesis to inspire to hit the gym over the winter so I can beat it next year. Plus add a souvenir stein bigger than most pitchers, a fun night in town and at camp by the fire, lots of great people and you have one awesome trip. Thanks to all for coming.

Question: since we're close to town, is it necessary to bring breakfast/dinner?

    October 3, 2013

    • Lisa

Probably best to pack your food with you as the town is a ways (could stop in town on your way in or out of camp but to have to go to town just for food and come back to camp in one go might be a pain).

      October 3, 2013

    • Will

It's down the hill. Takes five-ten minutes. We're camping on top of a hill across the street from safeway. I'm sure we'll all swing by it on our way to camp.

Leaving Seattle Friday after work, coming back early Sunday if anyone is interested in a ride.

I've never needed to get to there (so far). One time the dirt ramp down into the field itself was dusty and required a couple of goes to get back out, but you can park along the roadside and just carry your stuff the thirty feet or so to where you want to camp.

      October 3, 2013

    • Will

Its going to be packed! :/ I hope we get under half of rsvps this time

I haven't fully bailed, yet. I just won't be able to come up there until Saturday afternoon. I have a volunteer thing Sat morning I forgot about and can't get out of since I bailed on them last year of a hike. Just thought I should pull myself off the list now while I figure out the details. Sorry. I would at least like to come up for the Oktoberfest Saturday evening and watch some of you all climb if I get there early enough.

    October 2, 2013

  • Damon

Anyone flexible to do Friday and Saturday? Weather's looking much better then than on Sunday...

    October 2, 2013

  • Erik G.

Ufta! 50 people? Bruce, do you want me to form a subgroup to hit up a different crag- and campsite? (I could grab some sites at 8 Mile pay CG- a couple hundred yards from the crags). Otherwise Clamshell Cave is gonna look like the Dihedrals at Smith on a busy weekend. If not, we can just wait and see how many turn up. I'll bring some ropes and gear to string another crag, plus some pads for bouldering at the nearby Forestland boulders (a hundred yards from Clamshell)- they're classic.

    • dre

The rule of thumb is half of those that RSVP to meetups usually show up. theirs always the exception tho.

      October 1, 2013

    • Erik G.

Yeah, I got that Dre, but even 25 is a stuffed crag. I'll swing by for the meet and greet but then head to the boulders or Alphabet Wall.

      October 2, 2013

Anyone have a map to the camping area? The one in the description doesn't seem to work. I did find the train tracked on Mountain Home Road.

THis is perfect! I am going to Leavenworth that weekend for a friend's wedding and would love to get some climbing in on Saturday morning for sure. Possibly Sunday also depending on how late the festivities go on Saturday.

I already have a hotel reservation, so will not need to camp.

    August 20, 2013

  • Erik G.

I might join this, but I'd probably be hitting up Alphabet Wall http://www.mountainproject.com/v/alphabet-rock/105825051 or bouldering at either Forestland or Mad Meadows. Or just filling my krug again and again downtown. :-)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
