Climb/Camp Vantage

  • September 7, 2013 · 10:00 AM

Lets keep the streak alive with another great weekend of climbing in Vantage. Provided its dry and not to hot.

Saturday the Plan will be to meet up around 10 am and climb around the Feathers, and perhaps mover over to Sunshine Wall later on. Then camp out Saturday night.

Sunday will be more of the same awesomeness in a couple of the different areas Vantage has to offer.

http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/Washington/Central_Washington/Frenchman_Coulee_AKA_Vantage/Sunshine_Wall_Area/

Getting there: Take I-90, jump off at Exit 143. Take the first left onto Silica Rd SW and then it's the first left onto Vantage Road (there's a home and a bunch of trees on the corner).

Stuff to Bring

Essentials: Harness, shoes, water, sunblock, Discover Pass required.

Would be handy if you have them: Rope, helmet, quickdrawers, personal anchor, slings, ATC, chalk, anchors.

Camping: Tent, food, firewood, sleeping bag.

Thanks so much for organizing a great trip Mike. And for my first lead, clean, and rappel! Grateful for friends that push me to achieve what I otherwise would never attempt.

Great weekend, glad to see everyone out there. Perfect climbing weather the first day, second day was pretty hot but a good morning session.

    Hey Mike!
I climbed Vantage, but not camped there. What's the overnight arrangement like? Side of the road, car camping loop, hike in?
    Thanks!

Hey Will, I will likely be going out tomorrow mid-late day. Can you describe the right spot? If so, I will snag it and keep my car there...

      September 5, 2013

    • Will

Drive past the first turnoff, and the feathers. The next left turn in will be the big camping area. Drive back along the road on the rock road. Hope your car is higher than mine! Back as close to the road and to the feathers as possible and that area is pretty good. The other guys will hook you up, they know where they're goin. Ian, Stephen and Alex know what I mean. Everywhere is good, though.

Some family matters to attend to, I need to stay on this side so sadly I won't be making it. Enjoy the crags, the company and the cosmos, friends. I'll see you next weekend with my brother at Mazama!

Anyone heading out Saturday morning have space for one more? Or would like to carpool with me driving?

    September 5, 2013

    • Chris

It's just off of exit 15. It's a big covered parking garage. Lets meet on the first level facing the light rail. My # is above. Chris

Yep Lisa that's the one. It's not very big so we'll spot each other on the 1st floor

Saw this, so no fires? Camping: Primitive camping (no water or tables; 2 chemical toilets) is allowed in the area south of the Feathers
to the main climber’s parking lot. Open fires are not allowed from May 15 to October 15. When fires are allowed,
fuel must be obtained elsewhere and burned in existing fire pits.

Work is killing me but hopefully I'll get out again to some pace other than 38 & 32 before the end of the summer... Have fun!

How quickly does Vantage dry out? Looks like they are suggesting heavy rain today and tomorrow. :/

I was more curious on the wait time needed on Basalt to prevent damaging the rock. Like sandstone..

      September 5, 2013

    • Stephen Y.

Considering the amount of chossy and loose rocks as well as broken holds, I am not sure any amount of wait time will prevent damaging the rock.

I'm coming up from Seattle, open to leaving either Friday night or Saturday morning but I need to be back in Seattle Saturday evening. Anyone want to carpool?

    September 4, 2013

    • Anil G.

I have a car and am happy to drive the two of you. Call / text me sometime Thursday at[masked] and we can figure out details.

Do you have space for one more?

      September 5, 2013

  • Mark

    Two quick questions:

#1 What is the right guidebook?

#2 What is the best camp ground for the area?

    September 5, 2013

    • Mark

Camping seems to be in the park primitive or car camping with facilities at Wanapum SP.

      September 5, 2013

    • Emily

Camping is right in the area where we climb, people just set up tents near the parking area. We'll want to bring our own water since it is primitive. Also yes to discover pass. I'm not sure which book, but there are print-outs online of all the routes, I'll try to find the link for that.

Is there anyone I can hitch a ride with from Beacon Hill, Seattle? Will bring rope/rack!!

    September 1, 2013

    • cedric

Sorry, I should add a couple other things :)
I'm visiting Seattle (just got in today!) from New York and am stoked to get on some of the awesome rock around WA for the next month.
I climb 5.10+/5.11- sport at my peak, although have been getting into trad so have been leading 5.8 (or 5.7 in the gunks).
I don't have a car, but have a 60m rope, helmet, quickdraws, alpine draws, a decent rack, grigri, atc, tons of slings, etc.
Also have camping stuff (but no stove/cooking stuff)

Would love a ride out of Seattle on Friday evening or Saturday morning! cheers

    Hi friends,

Super excited to climb Vantage with you. I am only a traveler visiting family in Seattle, so unfortunately cannot stay Sat night. I would love to arrive and camp Friday, though, if anybody else would be down. Assuming nobody is interested, does anybody know how likely it may be to find partners for day-of climbing? Like, how popular is this crag? I have draws, rope, camping gear, and am good to lead 5.11 sport, stoked to follow on cracks, and offer a solid belay.

    Thanks!!!

Has anyone thought about Leavenworth? It's going to be great weather!

    August 30, 2013

  • Emily

I'm planning to drive up Friday night and camp, then only stay through Saturday afternoon.

    August 28, 2013

  • Will

I'm pretty stoked to get back to Vantage, finally. I'd like to check out Powerhouse wall if we can. Everyone try to bring one bundle of wood if you can. I'll bring my grill for the fire if you want to bring brats/steak/hamburgers/whatever.
