2007 -- no red light cameras in College Station.
2008 -- red light cameras in College Station.
From 2007-2008 College Station had a 233% as many accidents at Red Light Camera Intersections.
2007 College Station:
THREE accidents at the 4 red-light camera intersections BEFORE red light cameras.
2008 College Station:
SEVEN accidents at the 4 red-light camera intersections AFTER red light cameras.
In fact, the intersection at Walton increased from ZERO accidents without red light cameras to TWO accidents with red light cameras.
A five-year study in Washington DC revealed:
"It has been statistically proven that the use of red light cameras (RLCs) and speed cameras increases the number of accidents that occur on the road. The District of Columbia installed the first RLC in 1999, and a study five years into the program revealed that the total number of broadside accidents increased by 30 percent, and the number of crashes that involved an injury or fatality rose 81 percent. In fact, these camera-ridden inersections often have worse accident statisitics that intersections without cameras because drivers have a tendency to race through an intersection to beat the camera; an unthinkable act were a cop physically present."

The currently installed cameras are UNCONSTITUTIONAL by the US and Texas constitution!
Red light cameras also violate the Texas Transportation code:
SB-1119 states in sec.707.003-2(b) "A local authority that contracts for the administration and enforcement of a photographic traffic signal enforcement system may not agree to pay the contractor a specified percentage of, or dollar amount from, each civil penalty collected."
Texas Representative Fred Brown agrees. He came to our tent in person to sign our petition.

Additional problems:
*Decrease Safety
*Increase Collisions
*Remove right to appeal
*Remove officer discretion
*Remove the right to face your accuser
*Force one to choose between safety or fines
*Remove opportunity to explain extenuating circumstances to jury
*Create a special risk to motorcyclists, to whom a rear end collision could be fatal
*Create an unequal standard for the same offense depending on whether it was witnessed by an officer or a camera
*Have been constantly shown to only be the first step towards further camera monitoring, ranging from registration or insurance checking to speed limit and vehicle emissions enforcement.
We are still Americans. Our Constitution still says we have the right to face our accusers in front of a jury of our peers. You no longer have those options with the red light cameras system. Whether you believe they're only there for revenue, they don't work, they actually cause accidents, or you just don't like "Big Brother" watching you, one thing is certain... THEY ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
