Ummm... I don't deny the possibility, but research isn't conclusive in my opinion. While it is entirely possible (and likely) that oil is a finite resource, there are alternative sources that haven't been accounted, the possibility of alternative/synthetic fuels, and myriad other factors. Duh: I do not say that oil is an infinite source, but it is a vast source of energy which IS NOT a fossil fuel and it's availability will probably exceed well beyond our life times and beyond. As always, I advocate the Free Market position for privately funded, unhampered research and development of alternative energy.

I can tell you that the predictive power of the peak formula seems to hold some value, but they may be applying that formula beyond what its ACTUALLY supposed to measure. yuh think?!

Of course, you probably believe in cold fusion too, and think that the Government is just hiding it so that it can damage the environment so we won't have woods to hide in when they unleash their final attack of monkeys armed with lasers riding on the backs of lions.
more brilliant reasoning from Tomo, the fence sitting, politically "correct", would be ivory tower intellectual who no doubt will be leading the monkeys and lions through the woods because humans will not follow him.

And you do demand standards Fred, you demand reason, rationality and research. That would be fine if you didn't fail so consistently at all 3. Duh: I SEEK, not demand those three.

*Smirk* So go ahead and continue to make jabs and quips at my expense Freddie always, it's so easy, thanks!, they really don't bug me at all obviously not, otherwise you wouldn't defensively mention it. I get frustrated as usual at your inability to comprehend the difference between fact and fantasy, gee, I'm glad you know the difference not your  attempts to effortlessly &  accurately insult me. After all, you're the one missing out on getting your ideas heard and taken seriously as opposed to yours being heard and taken seriously... y'know,y'know, beyond the choir do I and/or the choir actually care what you think or say?

Awww, that's cute and most accurate

Fred, I'm not politically correct not much!, I'm polite and specific with the language I use. I happen to think the ideas that we discuss matter, whereas you use humor to hide your inability to hold to the same standards you demand others to follow. Wow! I didn't know  that I humorously demanded any standards from others?!

In some ways Fred, that's worse than Mary, because people respect your opinion unlike yours?. The good ideas you express are well received gee thanks!, but so are the ones that have been poorly constructed because the average person lacks that "skeptical toolkit". so are we to believe that Tomo is an above average person?

And quite frankly, for us much as you pat yourself on the back, you should know better.
I always know better when dealing with the great Tomo. At least Mary is safely relegated to the "chain-letter" crowd and obviously doesn't know better (although I haven't seen any chain letters lately so kudos Mary and thanks!).

Absolutely! It's science, and that means it must be possible to falsify the claim.

For example, here are the claims - falsify any of these points and the model needs to be revised because it doesn't work:

I know Wikipedia isn't a great source, but finding a more credible source would take time.

Here is where I feel the gap between what the science of global warming is saying separates from the politics:

So Fred, will you ever accept the possibility that you could be proven wrong - very wrong? What would it take?  it wouldn't take a politically correct, would-be ivory tower "intellectual".

Cap and Trade is a potential rip off and when it's supported by big business and big oil
it's all the more reason to oppose it!

I keep on saying it over and over again - I'm advocating the science, not the politics.

I don't have an opinion on Cap and Trade other than how it theoretically might work if the catastrophists are right. And that's a BIG if.

What I keep arguing against is this idea that Global Warming and Climate change is somehow "fictional" (y'know, the way Creationists try and say Evolution is a secular religion, blah, blah). That doesn't mean these concepts haven't been hijacked... by both sides unfortunately.

The way I see it is this:

  1. Global warming is true, and could potentially be harmful to mankind's survival.
  2. Considering that mankind does have an impact on the environment, it is possible that what we do as a species COULD effect a change in the climate that we would perceive as positive or negative.
  3. In the interest of survival, we need to make the best decisions we can NOW to avoid negative consequences in the future.
I tend to err on the side of "significant human impact causes significant change in the climate" mainly because of the consequences, and I'll use the extreme cases below to sort of put a bow on the concept.
  1. If we effect the climate a little and ACT as if we effect it a lot, we could potentially face economic disaster (even worse than now), there could still be environmental factors which decimate mankind, but ultimately there was nothing we could have done about that anyway.

  2. If we effect the climate a little and ACT as if we effect it a little, we could potentially face economic disaster (even worse than now) because environmental factors which decimate mankind, but ultimately there was nothing we could have done about that anyway.

  3. If we effect the climate a lot and ACT as if we effect it a lot, we could potentially face economic disaster (even worse than now) because environmental factors which decimate mankind, but we could mitigate some or potentially all of those environmental "side-effects".

  4. If we effect the climate a lot and ACT as if we effect it a little, we could potentially face economic disaster (even worse than now) and environmental factors would decimate mankind, which could be prevented if we just took responsibility for our actions.

Maybe a political scientist, but until you show me a paper he's written that been published in a scientific journal, a single study he has conducted in the field of climatology, or something that qualifies a s a credential, he's just a moron who has hurt science by advocating a political idea over genuine scientific inquiry.

Plus he talks funny. 3 words... Man-Bear-Pig.

Cute... you realize I was copied on the same email, right?

And actually these scientific terms have been hijacked by non-scientists who then use them as if they knew what they were talking about. Global warming, global cooling, and climate change are separate concepts that are tied together.
