Avoiding monolithic Rails apps using RestPack, with Gavin Joyce from Zendesk

In this meetup, Gavin Joyce ( will talk about the problems that large monolithic rails applications can have and how they may be solved with RestPack ( and rails-api (

As your rails application grows in size and complexity, technical debts accrues. Large monolithic rails applications can be problematic:

  • Application startup time and the testing cycle takes longer
  • Scaling your development team is hard due to ever increasing system complexity
  • Regressions bugs become more common
  • Scaling the database is hard

By breaking up an application into simple and reusable RESTful services, large applications become easier to scale and development teams become more productive. RestPack is an ambitious attempt to solve many of the common problems that large rails apps have.

For this event, the action returns to Engine Yard, where you won't go hungry or thirsty - pizza sponsored by the fantastic Zendesk and craft beers by Engine Yard.

I thought I was going to make it but sadly I can't seem to keep both eyes opening at the same time and do basic arithmetics today. Will the event be streamed somehow? :)

Great timing. I'm in the middle of converting a rather large rails app into a series of smaller service oriented layers. Looking forward to this one!
